Narratively having Ever Given getting stuck in 2021 to set up Hormuz in 2026 is great foreshadowing. You want your audience to understand the basics of international shipping in a lower stakes context so you drop the real plot without a lot of saggy exposition about the minutiae of cargo logistics.

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites. He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

ICE Holding Chinese Man Who Documented Uyghur Camps
Heng Guan is awaiting an immigration hearing on Monday that could lead to his removal from the U.S. and ultimately land him back in China, according to his lawyer and a New York-based activist group.

More than anything else, powerful men - like the ones who run the NYT - believe in the legitimacy of power itself. Because if it isn’t legitimate, they have to start asking hard questions about the world and themselves.

The Schmitt speech today is beyond reprehensible, but it’s also just such a weird moment in American politics where people like Schmitt have to reconstruct an alternate history where *they* are “Heritage Americans”. Bro you are German and Catholic the founding fathers did not want you on the team

This is evil -- the kind of evil you read about in history books, the kind of evil you would never mistake for a single second if you saw it in another country. When you ask, of historical evils, "how could they let that happen?" That's us. We're letting this happen.

There was an elite consensus against transphobia so strong Texas’ Republican Speaker of the House Joe Straus refused to pass a transphobic law, the public broadly agreed, and then a few elite liberals took it upon themselves to make transphobia popular and more or less succeeded.

Every time someone responds to an obviously normative-aspirational claim ("this not who we are", "this is not America", etc) with some I'm-very-radical descriptive rebuttal ("er actually America has always done <similar bad stuff>") an angel dies. Like, no joke, dead. Direct causal result of this.

This applies to Australia too: 'Taiwan’s democracy is both shield and target. Its openness enables resistance but also allows infiltration. This contradiction must be acknowledged – not as a failure of the system, but as a feature that requires constant attention.'

the "DEI pilots" thing is not only untrue, but the opposite of true. The piloting profession in the late 20th century was so dominated by one Guy Type that they had to invent a new kind of training that forced pilots to listen to their first officers so they would stop flying planes into the ground

Top three Xiaohongshu posts for me today are a dual English/Chinese "I'm deleting this and going back to TikTok", an English "I'm deleting this because us Americans are doing more harm than good", and a Chinese-only "why does everyone not like Jews?"
