So sad to see that Sam Neill died. I sat next to him on a plane from NZ to Sydney. He was so kind, let me hang in the airport lounge w him (!), told me about his animals, and gave recs on what to do in Sydney and drew me a little map of how to get to Bondi. And was so gracious to fans who said hi.

Real actors - the ones I like to watch & work with anyway - are like this. They want a good part & to make some money, sure. But even if you get to hold up the scenery in something truly great once or twice in a lifetime, you rest easier.

I know this isn’t a popular choice in memoriam but one of my favorite Sam Neill roles was his supporting role in The Horse Whisperer. Loved him in everything else, yes, but loved his quiet presence in that film…as well as his portrayal of a city slicker when in real life he was just as ranch as Bob.
