ROCKSTAR UPDATE: Keir Starmer was just asked about the Rockstar firings in Parliament today where he described the situation as "deeply concerning" and promised it would be looked into by government ministers. Not that a Starmer promise is worth much, mind.

What society thinks disabled people want to hear: “You’re so brave!” “We look past your disability!” What disabled people actually want to hear: “We acknowledge your disability and will happily accommodate your needs.” “You can marry without losing your benefits.” “We’d like to offer you the job.”

I’m glad to see, for a change, that the takeaway is “clearly we need more resources” instead of “we need to stop diagnosing / recognising so many people”. Less diagnosis doesn’t mean less need, it means less needs being met.

An odd argument attempting to justify inaccessibility is that building things accessibly would only benefit a minority of the population. However, that is not the case at all. More people benefit from accessibility than inaccessibility.

I need space between tasks. I need time to transition. I can’t just jump from one thing to another, and that’s not laziness—it’s how my brain works. Monotropism isn’t a deficit. It’s just a different type of focus.

Disabled people should not have to conduct an in-depth research analysis on the accessibility of every new place they wish to visit.

This is a huge pet peeve of mine: The Inventory tab has a 'new' marker on it, yet no category has a 'new' marker and after going through all of them... I can't find any new items and the marker won't go away. Please, my OCD requires that I am able to make the 'new' marker go away 😓

When I didn’t have “I’m autistic” I had “I need a minute”, “I don’t understand”. I had a lot of ways to communicate my needs. Better than what to many is a vague medical label. I was still autistic. #AutismAcceptance means accepting all autistic people, not just ones with “certificates”.

I frankly find it toxic that on Instagram the culture of the autistic community is leaning towards everyone having to prove their disability. Proving disability or being obligated to perform it has always been detrimental to disability advocacy as far as I'm concerned

Reminder: Alt Text is a disability aid. It is meant to convey the images to people with vision impairments. Describe what the image is. If it’s text, modern phone and desktop OSes let you copy and paste it from an image. They’re not a place to hide a zinger, or for snark.

Never forget that DNRs were placed in the charts of disabled people in the UK without their consent. When the government became worried about hospital overwhelm due to Covid - they were quick to decide who would be triaged out of care.

Expressed another way: ABA is the grotesque philosophy of *recognizing* that Autistic ppl are neurodevelopmentally impaired at navigating Allistic preferences & then thinking the solution to this is to force more responsibly onto disabled ppl to *perform* rather than teach Allistic ppl to *accept*

Your brand identity is not more important than user needs

The fact that companies often treat accessibility as an add-on or a nice-to-have is infuriating. The attitude that accessibility slows development is harmful, and just untrue. The truth is people don’t understand that ability is transitory.

Both PlayStation and Xbox now allow you to map your controller so a button hold input can be toggled via button presses, which is great. HOWEVER, both PlayStation and Xbox make this an option on their accessibility controller and premium controller, but not their default controller. Why is that?

There are plenty of scenarios in which spending time and money on features and options is the appropriate solution to barriers. But don't let yourself end up in a situation where you have spend money on them solely to compensate for unnecessarily exclusionary design choices.
