The Oscars are stupid, but I am glad they went all in on two really idiosyncratic films that try to grapple with who we are today. That doesn’t always happen.

Both of those movies went on to be much loved for almost two decades, and I really think the same will happen here. The parallels are kinda eerie. Sinners even won the same two awards as Blood (Actor and Cinematography), plus two more to boot.

I have been comparing this Oscar year to 2007 for a second. That year, two hugely loved movies from the same studio (No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood) faced off. The award went to the Coens, both because the movie was good and because they were “overdue” (whatever that means).

Man, I love that PTA invoked the all-timer year of 1975 in his speech. Go watch all five of those movies! One Battle will last. Sinners will last. Congratulations to all and to all a good night!

A big takeaway this year has to be that Sinners and One Battle After Another were big, artist driven, swings bankrolled by WB whose future is ultimately unclear. I like living in a world where people like PTA and Ryan Coogler get to make the films they want to make with those resources.
