RIP #MichaelKeating 'the funny one' and my instantly favourite in Blake's 7 when I was a kid. Rewatching as an adult you see his ingenious performance bringing an edge of reality to things, his cleverness, and often being the conscience of the gang.

World In Action - Seven Up! (directed by Paul Almond) aired on this day in 1964. The original plan was to revisit the children in the year 2000, but in 1970 Michael Apted was curious about how they were coping as teenagers, so the idea of a new documentary every 7 years was born.

Going through some childhood books at my Dad’s house, I’ve found this Ladybird book on ‘How It Works… Television’, published in 1971. It includes Daleks on one of its illustrations and has a lovely plan of Television Centre on its endpapers.

This was in 1996 and I remember Media Guardian reporting some ITV exec said they'd watched Band of Gold followed by the Cracker repeat as they went out and vowed never to do such a grim combination again

Incidentally, despite having a similar title, this is a brilliant book and a million times better than the Geoff Tibballs one I was slagging off earlier

You see a title like 'Timmy Mallett explains APARTHEID' and you'd probably go 'Oh, good grief'. Instead, you get a dialled down Mallett in South Africa, and he absolutely smashes explaining a difficult, complex subject to children right out the park with pitch perfect balance. Genuinely brilliant.
