Yesterday, I went to Shepherdleas Wood, SE London, to take photos of bluebells, and I encountered a very lethargic bee (had the nectar fermented? 🤔), making it a very obliging photographic subject! 🐝

Some of the birds I saw and photographed yesterday at Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park – including goldfinches, greenfinches, and coots and their chicks. I'm not sure I'd ever encountered either of those finch species before, so it was a delight to see them.

I adored @grindrod.bsky.social’s ‘Tales of the Suburbs’. As someone who felt the need to escape the suburbs myself, it gave me a new appreciation of them as a queer space. There’s such a rich diversity of stories that inspire laughter, sadness and deep empathy – but overall, joy and hope.

I had a yen this week to watch a film I hadn't seen since childhood: 'Journey to the Far Side of the Sun'. It is *not* a good film. However, there's nothing so bad that it can't be improved by a brief cameo by Nicholas Courtney.

I watched The Man Who Never Was (1956) this week, a film about Operation Mincemeat. Lovely to see William Russell in a small but important role (and in Cinemascope too!) as an RAF pilot who wins and breaks the heart of It's a Wonderful Life's Gloria Grahame.

I had a fantastic time yesterday at the BFI screening of the 'Warriors of the Deep' Special Edition (which is a *real* improvement). Janet, Peter, Sarah and Tara Ward were all on top form. Tara's memory of the welcoming atmosphere created by Peter did *not* go down well with Janet! #DoctorWho

Watched 'No Place for Jennifer' (1950) tonight, which was an enjoyable enough drama about the impact of divorce on a child and, more importantly, included a brief glimpse of the Euston Arch. Silly ending, though. The cameo of a pre-Hartnell Doctor was a surprise.

I watched The League of Gentlemen for the first time in a few years last night. Seeing the portrait of Hyde's wife, I thought, "Hang on, isn't that the portrait of Deborah Kerr as Barbara Wynne from The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp?" And it is.

I watched 'It Couldn't Happen Here' for the first time yesterday and spotted something that's probably only of interest to #PetShopBoys fans: a couple of the locations are in Crystal Palace, where I lived for 15 years. This one's on Crystal Palace Station Road, near the junction with Anerley Hill.

The thrill of seeing Barry Letts's name in the opening credits of films is usually followed by the disappointment of glimpsing him in only one or two scenes (e.g., 'Scott of the Antarctic' and 'The Cruel Sea'). Not so with 'San Demetrio, London', which I watched recently. He's in it a lot.
