Roughly 900 PIs who will not be getting their award in FY2025. But also they will not have that money for FY2026, FY2027, FY2028 or FY2029. and *next* year, we will be adding some more applicants to this list even if by some miracle the NIH budget is the same.

and there it is. the absolutely massive change in R01s funded multi-year. our perceptions that the new mandate, sorry strong suggestion, has had a dramatic effect on forward funding and therefore success rates is validated.

And importantly, while a few years to settle out might seem no biggie, it sure as heck is a big deal to those PIs who have been on the job for just a few years and are looking at the tenure decision looming ahead.

Started in Jan 2020 and haven’t caught a break since. But you can bet P&T committees don’t care - taking any world circumstances into account is “lowering the bar.” I’ve been told all standards for grants and publication remain the same. And I have too much service.

A couple of related-unrelated thoughts that have swirling in my head: 1. This is a bad time to become a new PI in the US. Probably the worst since WWII. If you're negotiating for a position, know your road is way harder than it was for the people on your TT committee. Negotiate accordingly.

Gloves have risen an insane amount in the past ~5 years. They spiked during covid and then went up from there.

I’ve had a lab for less than 3yrs. In that time the costs of many science reagents have grown faster than inflation. I ordered an antibody today that I paid $383 for in 2023- today with a good promotion, I paid $467. Tariffs on top of that. Other easy examples: Grids are up about 30% Gloves up 25%

I have NIGMS R35, impact score 12 NIHGRI R21, 4th percentile NHGRI R01, 7th percentile (co-I) and it seems like none will be funded. 0/3. PO (who has been very helpful) said "Unfortunately, I do not expect this application will be selected for funding in FY25." 😭
