Mostly about grants. Some about education.
I stand by my assessment that Trump has spent his entire adult life laundering money for all sorts of mafias - so yeah, this isn't surprising because it's all he knows. The difference from Trump I is that now he knows he can get away with it.

A photocopy of a diploma? When I applied to be a scientific writer for a local hospital in 2012, the hospital called and verified my degree. Do they... do they not plan on verifying the educational history?

I'm embarrassed on Ohio State's behalf. So, they are just going to hire 100 new faculty in math, statistics, and computer science? Because that's the only way this makes sense.

Just had a talk with a couple of oncologists who are seeing cancer patients insisting on taking ivermectin. 🤦♀️ My joke that Republicans think ivermectin and Vit D cure everything just got a little more real.

So how did it go? NIH made 43 DP2 awards, the lowest number in a decade. I really wish Director Bhattacharya would spend doing his actual job rather than badmouthing the agency he is charged to lead and spouting platitudes on podcasts and elsewhere. 6/7

Also, looking at that original tweet - "yet we fund predictability?" What the F does that mean? First off, science needs to get off this stupid "innovation" horse as if its something we can identify, predict, and evaluate. We can't.

I spent yesterday with one of client departments going over everything that has happened in science, research, academia, and grant world over the past 10 months. I may need a week to get myself out of the resulting funk.

arXiv will no longer accept review articles and position papers unless they have been accepted at a journal or a conference and complete successful peer review. This is due to being overwhelmed by a hundreds of AI generated papers a month. Yet another open submission process killed by LLMs.

Am just working on a grant where the AlphaFold predictions for interactions were not accurate. So this is an important caveat if you're relying on AF for any research plan.

Majority of grants in my portfolio did not change titles... but they did have to edit their summaries and narratives. Mostly to remove any indication that their training grant would work to be inclusive and support a diverse cohort.

This is also a common problem in schools who over rely on chromebooks. We need to completely get rid of computers in grade school (and possibly middle school)

"I couldn’t beat em. So I joined em. And I tell more junior folks to do the same. Cite your funding generously." totally agree but would like to point out ways that other NIH policies are pushing people to consider whether they should cite their funding, pushing work back into the shadows

While more is usually better it cannot be emphasized enough that the difference between zero and one is immense. One huge / glam paper? An advocate can work with that. Zero? That’s some really tough going.

I have seen too many junior-to-mid career people making this mistake so I need to get this message out there: Once you get your first big award (R01, CAREER, standard NSF, BL2 DoD), your most important task is to publish papers that cite that grant for support.

Aside from a few quibbles I have with some of the abstract organization and my personal annoyance with the lack of mechanistic analyses, this isn't a terrible project. I can see it hitting the top third of the pile for the high need (progress in GBM remains painfully slow)...

This is such a revealing statement. For the first time in my career, we are literally scanning grant applications for forbidden words and taking words like "female" out of abstracts at the request of program officers. But Mike's intern can say the "r" word in public without getting dirty looks so 🤷♀️

Trump is not Tito. Tito was a strongman but he earned his cred by leading the Partisans to become one of the most fierce resistance forces in WWII and did so with no outside help. Trump is Milosevic - a human hot air ballon filled with bigotry, imagined victimization, and stupidity.

Just had another meeting with a junior investigator who had a fundable score on an R01 last year but because the R01 was in response to a diversity call, the R01 was not funded. The depressing thing was the grant was reviewed in a standing study section and scored with all other R01 apps.

Kids should be taking Algebra I in 8th grade - and the insistence for them not to is making it more difficult for kids to advance in math related careers. My opinion is that ALL kids should be taking Algebra I in 8th grade and that math in prior grades should be preparing ALL students to do that.
