Liked this piece, but I can't help but find the "double standard" complaint to be nonsense. There are different standards because they have different jobs. A journalist being romantically involved with a source compromises their ability to do their job. The same is not true for a football coach.

Basically any potential counter example to this is destroyed by the fact that they were bottom-five in the league more than 1/3 of the way through the season and then had the best 40-game stretch since the 1995-96 Red Wings.

Before the season, @brendanorr.bsky.social and I hosted a trivia challenge with some local media at Mr. Goodbar. I remember laughing with Matt and others afterwards about one analytics model clocking the Sabres at 98 points. And they cleared it by 10 points! After starting with 26 in 29 games!

That's 50 wins for the Sabres. Regardless of the outcome Wednesday, they'll end up third in franchise history behind only the 05-06 and 06-07 teams.
