If your therapist is harming you in ANY way, please STOP (if you are able). Therapy should be a collaboration, where you tell us when we're getting it wrong, because we will get things wrong sometimes. But even 'good' therapists are capable of doing harm, and the impact can be devastating.

If therapy is through NHS or an org where you don't get to choose or the therapist is assigned, check out what options you have for being reassigned. Even in mandatory therapy scenarios, there should ALWAYS be advice available on your rights if you want/need to change therapist.

Pro-tip: When looking for a new therapist, look for folk offering free intro chats & ask us directly how we work with topics that matter to you. If that feels daunting, or the option isn't available, send an email instead. Interview the heck out of us before going any further!

Safety Advice: I keep seeing young trans people on social media talking about therapists disrespecting their pronouns and parents telling them that the therapist has a right to their beliefs. I want to be clear: you have a right to the therapy room being a safe supportive space for YOUR growth.

A therapists job is to help you. A basic tenant of the job is to be nonjudgmental and incorporate holistic and flexible approaches to accommodate clients. If they are failing that, they are failing you and our field. Absolutely feel empowered to end your relationship, leave, and find someone else.
