It's awesome when you finally read a book that you knew it was going to be great, and it is just as good as you expected it to be. Isadora Mota's "Freedom Horizon" is definitely one of those. Extraordinary archival research to recover Black resistance from 1848 to 1870 and many wonderful stories!

So yes, I too would love to see more historical context in news stories. But historians: for the love of God, try to have some empathy for what journalists do and what their values are, and then think about how you can help. We’re all just desperately trying to hold up the first amendment here.

It has always been grimly hilarious to me that the two examples of Baumol's Cost Disease are physician and musician. Medicine and music are crucial for human flourishing! It's not a disease that these professions can't be automated away! We should call it "Baumol's Cost Go F**k Yourself."

In the last few weeks, the UAE has a) sounded out the US on a swap line b) pulled billions of dollars out of Pakistan, an ally c) left Opec, where it was one of the biggest members by quota.

What if we saw Baumol's Cost Disease not as a hurdle to be overcome, but a sign that some human jobs are valuable, and we should have enough humans trained to do them?

A classic of the genre. Americans reading the FT often assume I‘m British or Irish and cannot possibly understand their special culture. But I’m American. As @katie0martin.ft.com likes to remind me, very American, even. Born here, live here still. I’m evidently just a really bad writer.

On this point, I’d add it’s not just the swap lines (which actually are not available to most countries) but also FIMA repo (where the Fed lets you borrow against treasury holdings at the NY Fed). In that way the reserve decisions and swap availability become intertwined.
