When I worked in WaPo Opinions in 2017-2018, senior editors specifically told junior editors not to factcheck Marc Thiessen and other MAGA columnists, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to publish anything by them at all, and “we need them for intellectual diversity.”

The point is not that this can’t get worse. It can and it will. The point is Trump/MAGA already intended that, they weren’t pushed to by any event. And they’re already trying, in quite bad ways, they weren’t being nice up until now. Their ongoing limitation is capacity, not desire or morality.

We’re already living through Trump’s crackdown on the left. Troops to cities, ICE targeting, mass firings, higher ed, media, science, etc. They don’t have some big cards they’ve been holding back. They do, however, constantly try to pretend they have more to scare people into acting as if they do.

In Chicago right now, I know some folks are discouraged bc ICE has been relentless, and is spreading out its attacks across Chicagoland, which makes it very hard for folks to mobilize and respond. But I also think about why they have to do that—all of the organizing that has made their jobs harder.

Do not assume that everything they set out to do is inevitable. They have been successfully fought on multiple fronts, from courtroom wins that have actually stuck to city and state governments that haven't backed down, to activists in the streets organizing against their violence.

Remember to have unanimity of blase things to say on this day, or the fascist right might do something like hospitalize dozens of cops in an insurrection, commit racially targeted mass shootings in El Paso/Pittsburgh/Buffalo, kill Minnesota lawmakers or bludgeon the Speaker of the House's husband.

Last night, Poland recorded as many as 19 airspace violations by Russian drones coming from Belarus. Polish and NATO troops were forced to engage Russian targets over NATO territory. If NATO doesn’t set clear boundaries here, these probing missions by Russia won’t stop.
