I think it's largely a divide between the olds and the normies. Social media conglomeration is still relatively new; before that we had websites, forums, chat channels, individual BBSes. It took more effort, and was better. Hell, "decentralization" was kinda the point. It couldn't be taken away.

One of my housemates had a 300 baud modem in the late 1980s. He used it mostly to access local bulletin board sites and ASCII porn.
