mechanically, one thing i'm considering is a workhorse ranged attack + a melee, though not at all like radiant silvergun or birdcage. more like the gauntlet in quake 3or the plasma discharge in doom eternal.

hear me out, what if for extremely high power load or high data connections we had a plug type which was actually mechanically robust instead of one which wobbles around like heck and comes unplugged easily.

here is SHUTTLE, being used to explore rather than in a combat role.

this is telepathy in poschengband. the detected creatures here are offer general category (O for large ogrelike being, etc.) but not specific type, stats, etc.). you have to directly sense them to get specific information. telepathy is expensive, has a limited range, and does not last long.

this is all in flux, but i thought i'd do a design thread on interesting ideas for some scrying / information skills! in general, information based magic + skills have a lot of potential in 2d games, and are often underutilized. i'm experimenting with this a lot in [the coiled sun]. here is ECHO.

partially implemented [sense doors] spell. i'm currently doing a rolling focus which generally picks new doors, but /will/ double up on known ones sometimes. i might also make it prefer nearby ones.

i'm working on an input settings menu

working on my input settings (and gently refactoring the input code itself). i am going with hotswap, last gamepad with input is the currently selected one. i might have an option for making it stick until manually changed, if people want that. thanks for the thoughts and sharing your approaches!

working through strict 8x8 interpretations of 2700-27bf dingbats. the spec necessitates that many of these will be loose takes, and in those cases i'm trying to give them utility as decorative forms even when they're not readable.

input refactor update: i am still adding special cases, but i now have nice unicode representations of button and axis mappings.

some of the weirdest bugs are when things don't seem like they should be working, but they are. up is not assigned but it's working normally.

that's not bad. one of them was seated slightly high, and I had a little bit of solder mess on another one, but I managed to clean it up pretty well. time to go and put firmware on this and test it!

i found a few interesting items, but am not yet at a point where i want to pay through the nose to *identify*. the cap is activatable but i don't know what it does yet! it recharges slowly so i'm running around and sandomly testing it when it hits full.

the poschengband character i started is coming along! i'm playing very deliberately (for me), maintaining distance and using summons meticulously. here i am with a pack of manes i summoned.

Did some work over the weekend on a totally revamped UI for my Cyberpunk MUD. Instead of having one window, it's going to be a desktop-like environment that can have multiple aspects of the world on display simultaneously. I also added a filter to make it look like a failing CRT.

Hey. I believe that for as long as there are #bookworms and #TTRPG players, roleplay MUDs remain one of the best avenues for written creative expression. I'm combining what I've learned from my work in film, music, and writing to design a roleplaying game that helps players improve their real life.

So perhaps the problem is just that nobody has thought to rebrand and market the niche outside of r/MUD?

i NEED to beat angband

We need to make people who want to make a roguelike play DCSS and Angband

It's really neat tracing the lineage of concepts here into games like rogue, nethack and angband especially.

All games should have a "Nightmare Mode" difficulty modifier, much like DOOM or Angband. That includes stuff like Animal Crossing, however that would be applied.

If you dont mind me asking-- What was the decision behind choosing this angband variant vs regular angband or any other variant? I always see all these variants for angband and nethack and wonder why I'd play one of those vs the other.

i have played base angband the most, with this and zangband being relative newcomers to the rotation. these both have an interesting permutationally complex magic system and an overworld, which is appealing to me.

cave update: the simplified (topological) island connector i was working on is done. you can set the cutoff to any distance you want- here it excludes the final two islands, but joins up everything else. i have one more modular island connector to write after this.
