DOSBox-X The classic Dosbox 0.74-3 handles pretty much everything great out of the box, but it doesn't offer too many options in case you want something special to be different. That's where Dosbox-X comes into play. It is VERY extensive, offering numerous options. The menu is pretty handy, too.

I really love the design of this record, paying tribute to the good old days. Quake OST, composed by Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails. Released for the first time on vinyl in 2020. Pic from here:

Save the Lemmings Psygnosis / DMA Design 1991 A rare (back in the days) Lemmings demo a.k.a. as the Covox Levels. It was bundled with the Covox Speech Thing or you could get it by calling 1-800-GET-PSYG. The Covox was a rather rough tech D/A converter, connected to the printer port.

Video Test Bench V 4.5F Warren C. Martin, 2011 As our beloved CRTs are slowly getting old and probably need some care sooner or later, here is a DOS software for those of you, who do it themselves:

It covers pretty much everything, best tool I have seen so far.

NHL Hockey EA Sports 1993 The game was called NHL '94 on other platforms. I found the videos in the rotating puck quite impressive in the year 1993.

The path of Jupiter in the next four years, as seen in SkyGlobe 3.6 by Mark A. Haney, 1993 This can be done by incrementing the time automatically by one sidereal day (23h56m4s). Jupiter and Mars can be seen going retrograde several times. The thing zooming through every 3β4 second is the moon.

RighTime v2.53, 1993 by Tom Becker. A program to correct the system clock on MS-DOS Due to many reasons (e.g. temperature fluctuations that affected the oscillator), old systems could be off up to several minutes a day. I found this referenced when searching for software used by NASA.

AdvanceMame on MS-DOS 6.22 Pictured is advv, a tool to create custom modelines. The white box is the menu of the CRT, confirming the 59.1hz. This would be the modeline for Metal Slug, which had 320x244 @ 59.19 It's as close to the real deal as you can get. Last update for AdvMame was in May '25.

Frankenstein Windows Windows 3.1 running Calmira II - mimicking start menu, taskbar, desktop icons and many other features of Windows 95. It was first released in 1997 and intended for people, who were stuck with Windows 3.1 but wanted the future... It works surprisingly well.

Creating an online Avatar in the year 1994 Sierra launched the first online multiplayer gaming system in 1991, called the The Sierra Network (later ImagiNation Network). It featured chats and a number of games like backgammon or chess. There is still a host for this:

Kings Quest 4 1988 Sierra used different development tools over the course of time, one being AGI ('84 - '89) and its successor SCI ('88 onwards). KQ4 was produced in both, to support older and newer systems. The AGI version sold badly and was discontinued soon. It is considered very rare.

Windows Commander for Win 3.1 by Christian Ghisler, 1993 An orthodox dual pane file manager, now known on many platforms as Total Commander. The name had to be changed in 2002, because of certain similarities to a well known brand. T.C. 6.58 for Win 3.1 came out in 2008.

Jordan Mechner, creator of Prince of Persia, in 1989. Behind him you can see the pictures he produced to create the animations in the game, a technique called rotoscoping. The prince is actually his younger brother David. Inspired by the Disney movie Snow White, which used rotoscoping in 1937.

Pixel Art by Octavi Navarro O.N. was inspired by the graphics of games like Loom and Monkey Island as a kid and started pixeling with Deluxe Paint 2 on his 486 in the 90s. Years later, he joined the team of Thimbleweed Park. His pictures tell some really great stories...

Mortal Kombat 2 Arcade 1993 / MS-DOS 1995 A very faithful port, apart from the frame rate being less consistent compared to arcade machines. The series sparked many controversies, lawsuits, a congressional hearing in the US and MK2 was even confiscated in Germany.

Two main developers for what eventually became MS-DOS: Tim Paterson (who wrote 86-DOS, which later became MS-DOS) and Gary Kildall (who wrote CP/M, that served as blueprint for 86-DOS; controversies included) - in their natural habitats: driving rally cars and flying airplanes.

Microsoft Space Simulator BAO Ltd. 1994 Based on the MS Flight Simulator. It features 14 different spacecraft, e.g. the Space Shuttle or a Bussard ramjet for interstellar travel. The learning curve is VERY steep - the manual has 230 pages and you won't get anywhere without it.
