The Puerto Rican Independence party won 5 *TOTAL* seats in the legislature, split across House and Senate, and lost the governorship by *double digits*. The pro-statehood part has 11x more seats in the assembly than they do, across both chambers.

I don't think Puerto Rico is 'incomprehensibly poorer' than I can imagine because Puerto Ricans are by far the wealthiest Latin Americans and it's not particularly close.

At its all time peak for every referendum ever conducted, independence failed to clear 12% of the vote in a referendum that statehood won by a solid margin (2024). 20 years of economic crisis in Puerto Rico has increased support for independence from like 2.6% in 1998 to not even 12% in 2024.
