To any journalists reading this: It is essential that you bring a heavy dose of skepticism to all claims by people working on "AI". Just because they're using a lot of computer power/failed up into large amounts of VC money doesn't mean their claims can't and shouldn't be challenged. 24/

If your invited keynote speaker works for a company started because OpenAI wasn't basing its work enough on science fiction and said speaker uncritically cites TESCREAList, fictional work masquerading as science, you might not have organized a serious academic gathering.

To recap, some entities with a vested interest in AI: -Fossil fuel companies, which need new wasteful tech to offset avoid being rendered obsolete by solar -GPU manufacturers, which need something to replace crypto to keep prices artificially high -Data centers, ditto

-Content mills, which want a way to launder existing, copyrighted work into "new" uncopyrighted content -Media companies, which want a threat to force employees to accept layoffs and low pay -Propaganda outlets, which benefit from a flood of convincing false information

-Tech companies, which need a mythical new tech every few years to convince investors that they're on the brink of explosive new growth -Venture capitalists, which need a stream of new money sinks -Venture capitalists, who buy out the companies that go bust when the new tech fails

-The owners of every mechanical-turk third world sweatshop that actually does the "automated" work -Every company that collects, sells, packages, labels, and interprets your personal information Not pictured: You or me
