If we've learned anything from the part of our history where we created the extremely powerful, world-changing, uncontrollable new technology of a social internet, it should be that whatever is about to happen with AI will, if nothing else, be extremely dumb.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

What if… instead of paywalling the reviews, they didn't show you the scores until you read it and successfully summarized it?

Sure. You can give $5/month to Pitchfork to comment on and score albums (Let’s be real, though. This is about paywalling reviews). Or you can give $5/month to

and know that your money is paying the people that make the site great.

Maybe welcome people to the fold instead of berating them for taking too long, or questioning their virtue. Seems counterproductive to shame folks who are starting to get it.

At SNL I worked with artists who made the funniest, stupidest graphics in no time flat. Some of my biggest jokes would have been impossible without these geniuses building an insane image or finding the perfect real-life photo of a politician. Sucks that their work is being pushed aside for slop.
