While Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are puffing themselves up in front of the U.S. military leaders at Quantico, I would like to remind everyone of an important historical detail: “I was only following orders” was rejected as a defense at the Nuremberg Trials.

Trump wraps up a speech to military leaders that represented a major escalation of his effort to weaponize the armed forces into a tool he can use to violently quash domestic dissent. Hard to imagine how anyone with a shred of dignity can keep serving after this, which of course is the point.

For a man who’s a fall-down drunk and serial sexual predator—who lacks the proper qualifications for his job and is an unsophisticated, immoral, mercurial man with a history of failures (and firings) behind him—to lecture a room of his betters on standards is a sadistic joke and a stain on the USAF.

Today's double-act at Marine Corps Base Quantico was quite something. To be a General or Admiral subjected to a pep talk from a jumped-up Major (Retired) followed by a highly partisan tirade from a five-times draft dodger must have been infuriating.
