The biggest problem they have it wanting to keep their hands clean. They have been good and building networks in Westminster and in getting Brexit issues highlighted. But it's knives out time. They should be giving a stamp of approval - think fairtrade - to candidates that commit to Europe. 2

She obviously didn’t get/seek good advice. AFAIK many (most?) countries will not allow you to become a citizen in retirement unless perhaps you were previously a citizen. Many won’t even allow you to move there. And in the EU especially if you are from a Third Country.

Accession is a good thing, Andrew. Millions of people, many who suffered behind the Iron Curtain, now have open borders to Europe. This is to be celebrated, not attacked. There is no 90/180 day problem.

Actually the standard answer to this gets me even more: “but we were EU citizens back then and the EU should have protected us [so we could continue our life as if nothing had happened]”

It is a none issue. The vast majority of tourists has no need for more than 90/180. Visas, residency and citizenship is available to those who are ready to fulfill the requirements. 90/180 works as intended for the EU and EU citizens. To make sure that people do not reside here illegally…

Germany relaxed it greatly in 2024. Before it was restricted to another EU nationality. The Netherlands seem the strictest in EU. Their citizens would have to renounce Netherlands nationality (and EU citizenship) to gain British citizenship. Don’t know of anyone who’s done that.

I see it a bit differently. I disagree with Andrew Hesselden’s positions on almost everything. I regard his focus on the parochial discontents of British people who cannot cope with the reality of Brexit to be tiresome, pointless and likely to simply annoy the EU (if indeed they notice him at all).

In 🇸🇪 we are taxed on our worldwide income and you must meet an income threshold.. when it comes to citezenship the migration department requires 5 years of 🇸🇪 tax returns as part of your submitted paperwork.. I pay 32% as a retiree, my personal tax free allowance is under £2k..

I know of a US citizen who works for the UN in France. She was rejected because her salary is tax free.

Citizenship in Spain, (for those not married to a Spanish national), requires 10 years of continuous legal residence, and to pass citizenship and language exams. Brits also have to renounce their British nationality. It's not something taken lightly here, and rightly so.
