Parametric Equations with #AlevelMaths in #MathsToday Continuing to try and use Variation Theory to zoom in on possible misconceptions!

In #MathsToday I did this as a starter on estimation. With the aim of getting pupils to consider which counters are the 'significant' ones.

First I asked my 7th graders if 3x^2 + 5x = 8x^3, which was a mildly provocative. I asked somebody to use x = 10 to explain why it doesn't work. Then I defined "unlike terms" and had one kid ask, wait so you can't *do* anything to 3a - 2b? Like you can't solve it? There's something to mull on there.

I reached the part of 3rd Grade where I teach kids what the equals sign means. It's weird because this is such a conceptual block at first but my experience is kids get it pretty quickly when it's explained. (Unlike say why 4 x 3 helps you figure out 8 x 3.)

Gonna keep a thread of classroom things from this year until it gets boring, starting with this worked example I asked kids to analyze today. I wasn't sure about that first question -- is there constant slope? -- but a few kids said (incorretly) 'yes' and I think that gets at the heart of things.

After they got good at decomposing numbers, I used this to introduce the idea of finding LCMs efficiently. #MathsToday

#Mathstoday Year 11 finished finishing arcs and areas of sectors without their calculators. While year 8 looked at inverse operations with multiplication and division.

#mathstoday Our SoW puts similar triangles after right-angled trig, and volume and SA before both. Being the bloody-minded individual I am, I may have already introduced some trig and, today, had fun finding the volume of a frustum using all of the above. Lots of "Ohhhh" moments.

#mathstoday #alevelmaths . Y13 proved the compound angle formulae with a bit of nudge and a poke from me. Y12 proved some trig identities using sin/cos and sin^2 + cos^2 Y11 did instantaneous rates of change Y8 did very little to be honest. Tough class, behaviour and LPA makes it a challenge.

In #MathsToday my #ALevelMaths classes grappled with combined transformations, some good discussions and deliberations around the order that transformations are applied. Retrieval Quiz League Week 2 saw some improved scores across all classes too.

In #mathstoday I had my year 8s sit back to back, then one partner had to describe the circle diagram and the other had to draw it from the description. We then formally introduced each of the parts of a circle and used our correct vocabulary for the white rose task. #oracy #voice21

#MathsToday Equations with 9s & we looked at how ‘easier’ strategies aren’t always so! The first way of solving on the right hand example threw them for a loop. “We’re doing equations not fractions though.” (!) Such an interesting thing to say, and I wonder how much they thing everything’s distinct.

#Mathstoday My year 9s were really struggling with factorising so...stole one of Dr Austin's sheets, (expanding single brackets) and reversed it for factoring. It worked really well for both classes and gave them the scaffolding they needed.

In #mathstoday Year 10 did their first literacy task of the year to finish Period 5 on Friday. We have been looking at factors and prime factors so I read them an excerpt of Ogawa and we learned a little about amicable and perfect numbers.

We’re yr9 entry with pupils from all over and today in one of my classes while others practised single brackets I tried to convince a small group of them to think a bit more laterally rather than expanding and combining terms to push their thinking. Ended up here with them! #MathsToday

just a fun #MathsToday counting problem my colleague set out, which was solved in an unexpected way by students: How many ways can you arrange the letters A through F such that (A comes before B) and (C comes before D)? teacher expected: 6!/4=180 (all arrangements, ½ for each condition). Instead:

In #MathsToday my lovely new GCSE resit group solved all sorts of equations: without brackets, with brackets and with unknowns on both sides. Hopefully that we can get a fair amount of them through with a 4 in November 🤞 Spent my afternoon putting final touches to the whole college TLA handbook.

In #MathsToday and P5 at that, my Y8s explored unequal sharing and ratio. Using the algebra tiles for shapes/colours under the visualiser. They smashed it!

Taught my first lesson of the year in #MathsToday! (Actually a cover lesson for a colleague at a family wedding!) Year 11, recapping algebra skills. Substitution. Generally happy until answers were things like 3/2 - suddenly felt they “couldn’t do it”, so we did lots more to convince them it’s OK!👌

#MathsToday: Day 1! with three out of four courses meeting! It took a few minutes for students to go up to the boards, but I was really happy with the dynamic students started to build in ProbStat 1 around sharing reasoning, asking each other questions, and editing or building on each other's work.

#Mathstoday Year 8 looked at mixed LCM and HCF questions Yesterday year 11 compared distributions of box plots, not my favourite as well -writing. If anyone has good sentence structure comparing box plot questions would love them to be shared.

Spent a slightly painful 15 minutes discussing Q2 with Y12 today. The problem wasn’t with spotting the patterns, but trying to formulate that into full sentences. If you teach #ALevelMaths, I’d be interested to know how your students get on with similar “describe and explain” tasks. #MathsToday
