In #MathsToday I find that my #ALevelMaths students often try to use the SUVAT equations for non-constant acceleration questions (when they should use calculus instead) so I have invented a twist on the classic game "Is it cake?"... which I'm calling "Is it SUVAT?" 😅🍰

In #MathsToday I sketched this str line through 12,0 and 0,12 and asked for the coords of other points on the line. The Y11 student tried x=6 and thought y might be 8, or 7, or, eventually, 6. After agreeing 12,0 0,12 6,6 3,9 7,5 and 1,11 it took a while to spot x+y=12. The student 'knows' y=mx+c.

Made this for year 12 to practice discernment with differentiation. Took far longer to plan and write than it did for them to do it, but hopefully it helps consolidate and make meaning between sentences and expressions/equations! #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

Started the binomial expansion today with Year 12. Introduced it a different way to normal and it actually worked really well 😁 also started randomly assigning partners at the start of each lesson using playing cards - definitely recommend this for collaboration outside of friendship groups ♥️♠️♦️♣️

In #MathsToday with Y8 we used a set of questions generated on @studymaths.bsky.social's Mathsbot for using linear nth terms to find specific terms, followed by a "settler" task from @mathsbox.bsky.social on finding the nth term. Just enough time for a bit of bingo as a CFU as well.

In #mathstoday I showed my students what a 95% confidence interval actually means by using Excel and taking 100 random samples and seeing that the population mean was only within the interval 95% of the time.

Bringing the classic "esti-mystery" to my Calculus class. Students make an initial guess of how many pennies are in the cup, then use derivative rules (power, product, quotient, chain) to narrow down possible values one clue at a time. #ITeachMath #MathsToday docs.google.com/presentation...
