In #MathsToday I got my Y7s playing with the Frogs Project from nrich For which I put together an applet for them www.mrchapmanmaths.com/algebra/frogs Featuring -> Campaign mode where they have to get the optimal solution before moving on -> Colour adjustable frogs -> Confetti cannon when you win.

Lovely proportional reasoning from a pupil I tutor. She couldn't remember if she'd been taught similar triangles … but said: since 3 is less than half of 7, then AB will be less than half of 10.5 … and (red lines hers) if we split the 10.5 into 7 parts then AB will be 3 of these parts. #MathsToday

A task I liked from this week: instead of directly teaching the inclusion-exclusion formula, we treated finding probabilities as a puzzle to be solved with a Venn diagram. Then I showed them the formula and let them choose which they preferred to use. #mathstoday

#Mathstoday Year 8 started angles today. One of my favourite ways to introduce the protractor is looking at how to set it up correctly. Students can also easily see what not to do.

We were using a template for the conclusion to hypothesis tests in #ALevelMaths #MathsToday. Too many straightforward marks lost on these questions.

In #MathsToday I taught the same lesson 3 times, introducing the Normal Distribution to my 2 #ALevelMaths classes and also to the class of an absent colleague. One of his classes also needed to do Proof by Contradiction so I covered that one too.

Here is a full set of iceberg diagrams. The score is how many full squares there are, counting the ones above the waterline as positive and the ones below the waterline as negative. Given a list of integers (eg 8, 6, 0, -5, -8) can you make an iceberg that will produce exactly that list? #MathSky

In #MathsToday we bulk marked some of our mock papers as a team. Realised it was much less emotionally impactful when you don't know if the paper is one of yours or not. So much less "why didn't they get this right?!"

We used algebra tiles in #MathsToday to prove that the sum of 5 consecutive integers is always a multiple of 5.

Best moment of the week: celebrating improvement with my yr 9s, some of whom had 10x the marks in the recent test than the previous. Our key skills section in the tests is paying off, they are making big improvement in the basics that we can build on in yr 10.

In #MathsToday have been discussing the benefits of Graphical Calculators in #ALevelMaths. Having the same graphing technology in the exam that has been used in class is comforting, and probably helps check answers. But does it give students an unfair advantage? Your thoughts? #UKMathsChat

#MathsToday I didn't give Principles of Data Analysis students nearly enough time to talk through the different data representations they had looked at since last week (quilts, visceralization, scrollytelling). Not sure I prompted discussion particularly well, but they were all so insightful anyway!

In #MathsToday we used the Koch Snowflake to review writing exponential equations from data. Students then discussed what the end behavior would be for the equation of the perimeter. The kids enjoyed hearing how this was thought “abominable” by mathematicians when first discovered.
