Good to see that the OCR Core Maths textbook is finally in stock but 6 weeks before the exam I doubt my students will bother to buy it. When i first asked hachette learning about stock for this (back in Sept) they originally said it would be available in December 🙈 #coremaths

#AlevelMaths I noticed in an AQA mark scheme for differentiation from first principles they give a mark for ‘completes the rigorous proof by explaining that as h tends to zero the gradient of the chord approaches the gradient of the tangent at that point’. Are they required to use this language? 1/2

Marking #AlevelMaths year 1 mocks…is there a list somewhere of formula that students should know from gcse eg surface area / volume of a cylinder. The sort of thing that might come up in an optimisation question but won’t necessarily be given in the question.

In #MathsToday in #AlevelMaths I really did not anticipate how little my students would know from gcse on representations of data- was asked today why height of histogram didn’t match freq in table (having taught them this yesterday). I feel like there must be a better way of addressing these gaps.

No alarm turned off for me! We don’t automatically get holidays off,we get an annual leave allowance instead so I’m working today and tomorrow. On the plus side I get to work from home and with hubby also working from home and kids all out at clubs/nursery we have a rare opportunity for a lunch date

Talk to me about the large data set for #AlevelMaths AQA, when do you introduce it? What resources are there for this? Particularly interested in what you do in year 1 on this.

What do you find the quickest and easiest way to create a gcse assessment? (A full paper, edexcel, but with selected topics that we have done so far). Yet again in the mess of having finished my part time working week but still with so much to do before next week 🙈

In #MathsToday I had been excited for #AlevelMaths to solve the baked bean tin optimisation problem but I’ll have to leave it until next week as clearly they weren’t as secure on stationary points as I had thought. I really enjoy having a small group and being able to easily adapt plans as needed.

In #MathsToday my gcse higher resitters totally smashed quadratic sequences and were chuffed to bits that they could do the mathsgenie sheet which claims this topic to be grade 9. It renewed my hope for this group.

In #MathsToday #AlevelMaths were applying differentiation to tangents and normals. Thanks @susanwhitehouse.bsky.social for your worksheets on this, my students really liked your example sheet and the table layout of the exercises really helped. I have a feeling I’ll be using these all week! 1/2

In #MathsToday #Alevelmaths started differentiation with Gradient match from undergroundmaths. Honestly it was a struggle, and took much longer than anticipated.Constantly have to convince this lot that they will learn more if I don’t just tell them but with lots of patience they got it in the end.

In #AlevelMaths will student be awarded marks if they use Heron’s formula to calculate area of triangle with 3 sides known rather than using cosine rule to find angle first. I am surprised by their approach and suspect AI was involved but putting that aside is this accepted as a valid method?

In #MathsToday #AlevelMaths finished triangle geometry with some algebraic sine/cosine rule problems from @draustinmaths.com and some in context problems without diagrams given- after some reluctance to draw diagrams without help they did so well. I’m excited to start differentiation next week 😀

Does anyone have a nice set of cosine rule and sine rule questions in context? (Bearings, angles of elevation/depression of lighthouses ships etc?) #AlevelMaths

In #MathsToday it was my first day back teaching. #AlevelMaths derived the sine rule and cosine rule and asked some good questions about obtuse / acute angles. #CoreMaths mastered cumulative frequency graphs despite my poorly drawn free hand graphs after my screen broke mid lesson.

Left the house this morning with middle child screaming that he wanted mummy to take him to school and didn’t want to go to after school club. He struggles with transitions. Being a working mum really sucks some days.

Sunday Scaries are much improved by the presence of a teacher prep day Monday and CPD day Tuesday. For once they align with my part time working days so I only have my short day Wednesday to teach this week.
