Ok so I think there’s something else here too. We associate noir STRONGLY with the mid-late 40s to mid-late 50s—post WW2. But the novels were mostly written in the 20s & 30s by veterans of WWI. The two groups don’t have the same PTSD or the same generational trauma response.
