Given the garbage way our species treats people who already exist, I pray we never actually do create an A.I. with selfhood. Fortunately, the more the A.I. people talk, the less concerned I get.

Cannot believe that I got to profile an extraordinary filmmaker, who happens to be the mother of NYCâs new mayor, and think about intersections of art and politics, and how familial love might produce a buffer against the corrosive politics and cynicism of our time. My story about Mira Nair:

I always struggle with the anachronisms present in these types of films, and though it's obvious that total fidelity to 1943 isn't what Linklater and writer Robert Kaplow are aiming for here, I still ...

I read that horror story about the romance novelist using A.I. and teaching others how to do the same. As a palate-cleanser, let me share a site I've been obsessing over, which has a list of "Bestselling Books from 1900 to Present."

People might be confused about how the country donning full-body quilts at the Olympics is the same country producing the sexiest show on television, and the obvious explanation is that six months of winter will give you an acute obsession with exposed skin of any kind.

Oh the racist video is a distraction, is it? For the love of god, the guy is made up entirely of racist molecules. His whole backstory is racism. He's three racisms in a trenchcoat that says "RACIST" on the back. The goal is racism, the project is racism, it's racism as far as the eye can see.

I can be deeply cynical about social media (and my own use of it), but there are some dear, departed peopleâwhose voices I never heardâthat I still think about daily, wondering what they would think about a new piece of art, or a film I've just seen. I feel the absence of their kindness.

I do think it's important to distinguish between "good" and "good fun." I'm enormously fond of Monogram programmers from the '40s, but no one in the their right minds would claim that they're brilliant works of art.

Incredible stuff. An entire country tells you they smell shit on your shoes and then you decide to make them the only shoes you wear. "I love my shit-covered shoes," you say proudly. "I'm the shoes-covered-in-shit guy now, and no one can take that from me."
