After Glenda Farrell’s three Broadway plays in the 1929-‘30 season, she made a Vitaphone Varieties motion picture short with a comic named Harry Fox. Then she went home to Los Angeles on vacation and was suddenly signed to replace Lila Lee as the leading woman in a movie titled “Little Caesar.”

Glenda farrell, of course, is the one true Torchy. Lola Lane was ok, but she wasn’t Torchy. Jane Wyman was good, but she did a Glenda-as-Torchy impression.

Immediately after “Recapture,” Glenda Farrell was cast as a supporting player in the Alice Brady vehicle, “Love, Honor and Betray.” This opened in March 1930 and included some other notable names like George Brent and Clark Gable. It also closed after a month. We did get this photo at least.

This fun article on Glenda Farrell from the tryout period for “Recapture” in early 1930 reads like a publicity item from the play’s producer. Those who have been following my recent posts on Glenda’s early stage career should be able to pick out at least one glaring error.

Preston Sturges’s “Recapture” may have been poorly received, but Glenda Farrell continued her run of positive recognition: Atlantic City Press described her as “delightfully funny, abrupt, slangy, blond and very cute,” while Brooklyn Daily Times wrote that she “scored a great personal success.”

After the disappointingly short run for “Divided Homors,” Glenda Farrell quickly landed a top role in “Recapture”—the much anticipated second play by Preston Sturges, which opened Jan. 29, 1930. While the critics had loved Sturges’s first play, they lambasted this one and it flopped.

One of the most enthusiastic of Glenda Farrell’s out-of-town reviewers for “Divided Honors” had predicted that she would become a hit—“high priestess of the cult” was the phrase he had used—once the play hit New York. A couple weeks later, he had a follow-up, loudly proclaiming “We Told You So!”

Today in 1957 Mr. Adams and Eve, starring real-life married couple Ida Lupino and Howad Duff, debuted on CBS.

After her long run on Broadway in ‘Skidding’ in 1928-‘29, Glenda Farrell got another lead part for the fall of 1929 in ‘Divided Honors.’ With her reviews, this *should* have been her star-making role. Alas, it only lasted a month on Broadway. I’ll add some of her notices in this thread as I can…

Most watched actresses for 2025 not too surprising — Ginger, Glenda and Ida! Albeit modest numbers, alas. Most watched actors are more unexpected, particularly Hobart Cavanaugh. Perhaps most surprising: where’s Henry O’Neill? Only 5.

Glenda Farrell and Victor Moore make an unlikely romantic couple in “Gold Diggers of 1937” (1936), but the sincerity of their feelings towards the end comes through the madcap comedy of the rest of the movie. It’s really quite touching.

Today in 1937 Smart Blonde was released. It was the first of nine films starring Glenda Farrell as Torchy Blane.
