Ferrying the dead out of Manhattan was common in early 20th century as burial space was scarce and cemeteries lay across the river or Potter’s Field. Undertakers moved coffins after dark to avoid daytime traffic. By the 50s, when the film was made, the tradition was already fading, #FilmNoirClub

Skip is gonna do right by Moe. Widmark plays the morally ambiguous pick-pocket so well. These are the characters in #filmnoir that I find so interesting. He's not good, but he's not bad either. #FilmNoirClub

Many critics see Moe’s death as the movie’s emotional center, capturing the loyalty, quiet self-respect, and tough moral choices faced by people living on the fringes of society. #FilmNoirClub

Always love this shot of Jean Peters. The costume designer was William Travilla, known professionally as Travilla. He is perhaps best known for designing costumes for Marilyn Monroe in eight of her films, as well as two of the most iconic dresses in cinematic history. #FilmNoirClub

Candy's got way more b$lls than he does! The 1950s Red Scare, fueled by Cold War tensions, saw widespread fear of communism infiltrating American society. The film captures the era's anxiety and the pervasive fear of hidden enemies within society. #FilmNoirClub
