I hate to see what’s happening in New Hampshire. When I was growing up there, it was the most conservative of the New England states, because of publisher William Loeb and his Manchester Union Leader. But as its influence waned, NH became more liberal. Now, as elsewhere, progress feels fleeting.

Robert Montgomery had been bit by the directing bug when he stepped in for John Ford on the final leg of They Were Expendable. MGM, his home since 1929, then let him direct & star in Lady in the Lake, but were not eager to have him continue. He set out on his own. #FilmNoirClub #RideThePinkHorse

Dorothy Hughes resided in Santa Fe, where the Burning of Zozobra, "The God of Bad Luck," remains an annual event. The burning symbolizes the destruction of worries, and the promise of a fresh start. Can Gagin put his own past to rest so easily? Can any noir protagonist? #FilmNoirClub
