The film rights were sold to various studios and you only really could do a series back then by having the lead performer under contract for a number of years.

TCM “franchises,” such as Noir Alley, Musical Matinees, Silent Sunday Nights, and TCM imports, were designed to be one-a-week “destination” shows. It’s meant to foster community, as opposed to the “I’ll watch whatever whenever I want” mentality. Plus, they’d have to pay me more.

To clarify: when I said it “could never be made into a movie,” what I meant is that a movie version would never be as sneakily subversive as the book, where you don’t realize at the start something crucially important about the protagonist, who is telling the story in the first-person. Unique.
