The replies actually one-up'd me on explaining this: I'm basically doing base-2 phone numbers: "use small numbers when dialing locally, use big numbers when dialing further away. you can use big numbers locally too if you want. the number of digits you dial matters for getting to your destination"

So, I *think* i've come up with a novel way to do locally-stable addressing VERY efficiently, so we can have "fragments" of nets each assign addresses, and NOT reconfigure them when they join a larger network. Let's say you live in a city, and you want to send letters to addresses on houses: (🧵)

We need to come up with a catchy name for "failures/exploits caused by in-band signaling", like "the billion dollar mistake" was for nullable pointers. (Not even picking on llms in particular here: in-band signaling is the misfeature that keeps on giving, back to the dawn of computing/telecomms)

If anyone wants to experiment with this for `postcard-schema`, I would be incredibly interested. `postcard-schema` is largely a proc macro that I don't love, because it's just manual reflection. I'm VERY excited to see motion here, and very happy for @fasterthanli.me's push and Oli's work!

I had someone send me a link to this video, I'd heard of Radia Perlman before, but never heard her talk: youtu.be/qXz_RxBFQ20 I REALLY dig this whole talk so far, and at around 27:40 she mentions CLNP, which seems to have a similar hierarchical approach (and merging L1-L3 headers!)

I've started considering moving from AppleTalk-like class based routing (fixed 16-bit network prefix, fixed 8-bit node address), to something more inspired by ipv4's CIDR/variable length subnets I want to find a way to have *stable* local addrs assigned by local routers, that are globally coherent.

I need to write up a blog post for this, but instead I'm going to do a Post Thread about it until I get the motivation/time to one-shot a longer write up. This is: "Fun with using Traits to bundle things in Rust". I have two main uses: 1. "Grouping types + consts" 2. "Bundling generics"

Does anyone have a cool robotics arm kit, or similar kind of hardware available, that DOESN'T come with the control hardware tightly integrated? I want to build a cool demo for ergot, with a couple of MCUs running the show, but don't have the MechE chops to design the core bits.
