I find so many artists I've never seen before when researching ref on every single painting I make. This is the way we make connections. Using genAI to make reference is creating unseen missed opportunities at unprecedented speed and removing one more human element of art making.

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out. This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.

studying real scenes are very helpful. you don't often get natural gradients like this that you can try out. the way light works on distant clouds is also unique one day i'll understand enough about lighting and colors to whip out these kinds of atmosphere naturally
