I also despise the framing that "clean" books are more appropriate for teens or that teens are en masse advocating for them. But it misstates what kids actually want: variety. So much of YA is now aimed at adults rather than teens. Refocusing on teens doesn't mean going "clean."

And especially in the age of Christian Nationalism-fueled book bans, to break out a category of YA as "clean" is to pander to bigots at the expense of teens. To separate out your books as being "good" comes off as trying to get in with bigots by putting a target on everyone else.

We actually do need YA books that don't have (or have less) sex, romance and violence. We also need books that have those topics. We need YA to be varied - teens are diverse! - but we also must refrain from moralizing those themes. Abstinence isn't "clean", and sex isn't "dirty."
