Heated Rivalry made me want to be a practicing homosexual again.

I hope for all us Queer folks who grew up watching stories of our sickness, heartache, tragedy and death over and over again and nothing else, can finally inoculate ourselves with the audacious hope of Heated Rivalry. And for us to begin our collective Queer healing and thriving.

As a non-reader of Rachel Reid’s work and that entire literature ecosystem, I was completely prepared for tragedy, grief and Queer pain in Heated Rivalry. After all that’s all we saw in the 80s/90s. What I wasn’t ready for was feeling hope and possibility. Narratives truly shape how we navigate life

Who else stayed through the credits to make sure that Shane and Ilya were safe? Our collective hyper-vigilance was a force field of protection.

We don’t thank the women and femmes in our lives enough, who have protected us and our hearts from this homophobic and hateful world. Hella love, respect and reverence to all the Elenas, Svetlanas, Roses and Marias who kept us scared gay boys safe. Heated Rivalry you did good to remind us.

I think the reason that Heated Rivalry is hitting me in such an unexpected and profound way is that I realized that as a 80’s kid, I never got to see two Queer people drive gleefully and lovingly drive into the sunset and towards a hopeful future together.

I know it's hard to do but you have to tune out the constant & I mean constant torrent of criticisms on social media re: activism & organizing. If you don't, it can stop you from trying to do any activism or organizing. Most of the critics aren't doing any organizing themselves so keep trying things
