But all too often we see stuff being offered for free and that's just not super realistic in 2025's economy. What that results in is usually high project churn or burnouts due to doing too much unpaid labour or not being able to afford to sustain services.

The tl;dr; here is: if you truly want to make decentralization successful, you've gotta make it sustainable. People need to be able to pay their bills & live without financial stress to be able to provide these services in decentralized social networks.

I know better than to comment on community guidelines stuff, but there is one thing I want to remind folks: we're all here "stealing" compute and storage from Bluesky, so us indie builders have time to figure out how to break away from them in a sustainable way. This has been the plan all along.

1/2 If you want, true decentralization. It requires that you’re willing to take risks that could include jail time. This is due to decentralized systems being the antithesis of government regulation. If one part of the system caves to government pressure, the rest are also threatened.

If you're uncomfortable with Bluesky owning (and being able to delete) your data but don't want to go the whole way to self-hosted/another service, you should: 1) Register identity recovery keys, which will allow you to point your current identity to a new PDS 2) Backup your PDS periodically

I know some people will be pissed but the fact this change is actually happening and was addressed in public is a big fucking deal (esp compared to other applications + protocols), even if we might have wished it happened significantly earlier. Also a big differentiator from AP/Mastodon imho

I have like a huge amount of dev tools QOL updates I'd do to the ATproto TS libraries and I'd happily be unleashed on them a few hours a week in exchange for covering my rent

"a fun night of banging my head against a keyboard figuring that one out" truly encapsulates working with the ATproto libraries (affectionate, I know how hard it is to keep up with a dev tools environment like this with an alrady-stretched team)

What's funny about this is I'm still wondering if it's effectively the right way to do it. There is a second auth parameter in the server methods and I'm desperately trying to wipe its existence from my mind.

OMG the future is now, I've dreamed about having time to make a PR for this, truly one big leap for posters-who-always-remember-they-want-to-add-something-last-second everywhere

setting the git committer/author email to your did + publishing your signing key as a record on your pds should be all we need here. we can then skip the did ↔ email association we do in tangled. did a quick test to see if git/jj would complain; they do not!
