All of the work on this follows @dholms.at's Permissioned Data Diaries. Big credit to @zicklag.dev's work on Arbiter and @flo-bit.dev's work on Contrail. We're actually working to make sure spaces will be compatible between both HappyView and Contrail as things evolve.

ATProto is public by default. It's great for open social graphs, not so great for private groups, invite-only communities, or gated content. Spaces fix that with private, access-controlled data under your existing DID.

HappyView 2.5 is out, and I've added support for one of the most anticipated things in atproto: Permissioned Spaces. 🧵

Felix, CEO of Mastodon, and I hope to collaborate more. Mastodon has wide adoption in Europe and 8k communities (servers) running independently. The customization they give communities is inspiring to me. Public squares should be a gathering place for you to discover cozier corners/communities.

You can either look at the DDoS event and point at failures, or you can look at it as an opportunity to use the momentum and do something bigger. None of this was ever meant to be easy.
