1940s: Esau Jenkins founded a company to shuttle Black residents from the segregated islands of South Carolina to Charleston. During trips, he taught the Constitution and other knowledge needed to pass the discriminatory literacy test that was required for voter registration. #BlackHistoryMonth

Safe Bus, a Black-owned bus company, was founded in 1926 to connect Black neighborhoods to Winston-Salem, NC’s streetcars, which were largely in white areas. Once the largest Black-owned transportation system in the world, Safe Bus carried 8000 passengers/day. #BlackHistoryMonth
