Slip lanes are unpopular...but they're also hard to make work well for pedestrians as considering 4 different movements can be nearly impossible. Which has almost led me to believe the best slip lane for peds is in an add lane condition.

Traffic signal controllers are so much fun. This is a very simple logic statement that just says 'if that button is pushed when a certain phase is timing, call a different ped phase'. This saves a lot of time for the person crossing, and is pretty easy to implement. youtu.be/G9cjgl4reCI

The unique nature of signal operations at any given location makes it such a wonderfully fun challenge to nerd out to. There is no such thing as a 'basic' TSP system. I love it! BTW... @nacto.bsky.social in Minneapolis might have some good things to say this year!

What if we applied the traffic signal LOS to other things in life. Waiting for an elevator? Waiting for coffee? What 'delay' do we accept elsewhere but dont by traffic engineering measurements?

Tonight a busy Madison Transportation Commission. Biggest discussion will be about increasing safety on Park st in wake of a 17 year old killed on their way to school, after being hit by a driver going 60 mph. Madison is a safe place, but there are double the deaths from crashes than murder.

A 'coordination' strategy used in a few locations in Madison is a hybrid coordination & FREE system. Major intersections are coordinated, but minor intersections run free (or half cycle potentially). youtu.be/3b47yhe7aA4

Something I often see claimed is that private sector engineers work harder, are smarter, and faster than public. Both have different abilities due to what they're asked to do...but maintenance seems to be often dismissed by the 'private>public' crowd.

I am always shocked at how little value consultants put on mainline stop bar detection and side street advance detection. Its 2025 and we still just assume to always recall mainline phases to pong min greens and who cares about side street operations.
