One of my favorite things about being a traffic engineer in Madison is being told to make something difficult work. Not, design for best vehicle LOS...but make 1 fewer lanes work here. I dont know if its like that everywhere, but some of my favorite projects have been this way.

Its frustrating running into simple projects like adding a left turn arrow or ped signal only for it to have to turn into full reconstruction. Those engineers saving pennies in the 80s and 90s did not do us any favors.

Thinking about the Brass series vs Age of Steam. I think its a real shame they went the route of three separate games vs the route of a modular game. I think thats a better value long term. I own Brass...why would I buy Birmingham or Pittsburgh at full game price?

East Washington morning commute report. Drove 3 miles (9 traffic signals), stopped twice for 10" total...barely a stop. About 2 minutes. Took the bus for the remaining 3.5 miles (16 signals), stopped twice for 30" total. About 15 minutes.

If I were to ever get into consulting, my main goal would be to get agencies to impliment Signal Priority using the current technology they have. If they have loop detectors, add more; video detection, draw in specific bus zones. Build the institutional knowledge first, then add to that.

I continue to refuse that we cant detect trains by direction in the US. I've been told that several times and I just refuse this. How do busier, faster, and multi-track crossings work? Is train trajectory really left up to the cities to figure out?

Checked out the new apartments and bike path near the old North Transfer Point on Friday. The bike path doesnt do much now, but hopefully its the seed to a future network on the north side.

I feel like I need to make myself clear here. My fear is agencies will see the latest highest tech solution which costs maybe $1,000,000 up front and $1,000 per location annually to run and cime to the conclusion the TSP is expensive.

You really dont need "AI" for signal priority. But also so much of this is just marketing. Would you believe that transit signal priority programming pages have been in traffic signal controllers since around the 80's?

If I know my "black box" solution projects. This is an old traffic signal cabinet running old technology that hasn't been touched in a while. The cabinet, controller, and other improvements will he made but the benefits will be attributed to AI. Ive worked on a few adaptive coridoors myself.

Some day Id like to actually sit and watch the Michigan lefts in operation critically compared to a normal intersection. Left turns require 3 signals and about 1,750 ft of extra driving. Is that really better than a left turn phase?

Hey, its that thing Ive been saying about data centers...that concentrating data and services in one location just makes for easy targets.

My hot take similar to this: I think we are also messing up when it comes to ped/bike facilities. I've seen some overbuilt paths that are 15 feet wide because we 'need a 10' bike path and 5' sidewalk and we need them separate' Peds and bikes can mix, they really can, let's tone it down a bit.

Some field work today: Replaced an ASC2 controller with an EOS to add LPI's and some other functions. Checked on bike detection at Mineral Point & Whitney Way.

Roadway lighting is typically on 30-ft poles...however this can conflict with street tree canopies putting engineering and forestry departments at odds. With LED lights being more efficient than HPS were, why not trade a few more lights with shorter poles and let the canopies expand more freely?

Made both an EB bus trip (off peak) and EB vehicle trip (peak...it was a weird day). About 19.5 minutes on the bus and 15.5 driving to/from the same places. 25% signal delay while driving.

Permissive movements like right on red and permissive left turns also require the signal to he operating inefficiently to take advantage of the gaps in traffic. I've performed some observations and often the time savings is overstated. Especially a signals operating in free mode.

I very nearly retired early today. 23 traffic signals and was only stopped at three for 136" (86" of that from a state signal). 11.6% stopped at signals 4 3% stopped at City operated signals.

Caltrans: we do that here too...no pedestrians! See...modal filters!
