I am slowly realising that my software career has mostly been about moderating the level of “pissed” in my epistemology. So hard to not get angry when confronted with folks just assuming things will work perfectly. Or that “users will never do that”. Where does this blinkered optimism come from?

I think is a much better outage summary than the one that AWS published. I understand the time pressure AWS was under to get something out, but I found the initial report to be quite baroque and hard to comprehend.

I don't want public servants who don't understand how emails work and politicians who use this to tell pathetic lies about the FOI system regulating the use of the internet. The standard of public representation in communications policy is through the floor, and it's been Labor's level for decades.

Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

Maybe 10 years ago on the failed hellsite I posted about how much toasters all sucked and an acquaintance replied “well they should really use optical albedo sensors”. The madlads at Breville finally commercialised a toaster that measures the toast directly. Maybe there is some hope for the future.

The systemic failure here, IMO, is the government delegating successful operation of the 000 system in part to a bunch of private entities. This shouldn’t be touching private hands at all.
