This especially galls me when it comes to fictional stories depicting infidelity. As someone who has been cheated on, I understand that content can be extremely triggering, but that doesn’t mean it should be represented or worse that its depiction is tacit approval. Relationships are complex.

Women who get to make mistakes in media tend to be much more interesting. Flaws are what make us human, and seeing flaws in characters makes them more sympathetic and 3 dimensional.

No one’s writing think-pieces about how Dexter glorifies serial killers or that Sopranos normalizes cheating. “Because you expect bad guys to do bad things.” Why do women’s stories have to be morally good? Why don’t women get to make mistakes, and still get to find love and happiness?

It’s so obviously bullshit, when you see how often this tactic is used to shame people for liking media that depicts sex, sexuality, and/or romantic relationships. But not media that depicts violence, war, and sexual violence in particular. [See every iteration of CSI]

While we have every right to warn marginalized people, or anyone with sensitivity to the subjects and can critique the depiction of them in media. Neither of those require or justify using the media someone enjoys or even just consumes as barometer for their value as a human being.

There’s a difference between saying you dislike something like fictional stories with forced proximity, surprise pregnancy, or cheating and implying that people who like in media are responsible for real life harm. Romance, or any fictional media really, is merely a reflection of our world.

I’d love for actual nuanced conversations about the complexities of romantic relationships, especially when we talk about Romance media. There’s a difference between liking tropes in fiction and individual morality irl. This desire to enforce your personal feelings on other people is bullshit.
