I think part of it is the fact that our milestones have all become part of the "grind." Your schooling is a grind with the aim of becoming a corporate peon, your 16th birthday is about driving so you can get to work (with the "bonus" being that many jobs hire at 16,) and 18 and 21 open up more jobs.
