In Minneapolis and many other communities across the country, we're seeing people come together to peacefully protest and support their neighbors. If you're looking to get involved, here are some ways to help:

Jesus laying down his life out of love for the world rather than using cosmic and political power to force the world to obey him will forever be the greatest critique of any Christian movement that seeks to secure power in order to ensure that the world conforms to their will.

A Christianity that sides with the empire over the immigrant, the poor, the sick, the hungry, the marginalized, the vulnerable, and the oppressed, is a Christianity that follows someone other than Jesus.

America is not a Christian nation. America is currently a nation where authoritarians are using Christianity as a tool of oppression and self serving power.

It was “protect the children” until it came to immigrant children. It was “protect the children” until it came to gun violence. It was “protect the children” until it came to food assistance. It was “protect the children” until it came to healthcare. It was never about protecting children.

Claiming to follow Jesus who was unjustly accused, arrested, and executed by the state, all with religious justification, and then passionately supporting the state without question as it aggressively goes after people has to be one of the most blatant contradictions in history.

“The Lord proclaims: Do what is just and right; rescue the oppressed from the power of the oppressor. Don’t exploit or mistreat the refugee, the orphan, and the widow. Don’t spill the blood of the innocent in this place.” -Jeremiah 22:3

“Renee Good was a domestic terrorist.” “Liam Conejo’s father fled the scene.” “Alex Pretti was a domestic terrorist.” These are all examples of our “Christian government” breaking the 9th commandment: "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." (Exodus 20:16)

The tactic of demonizing empathy was for moments like this. When people have no empathy for others and are loyal to power above all else, they will believe whatever those in power say, no matter how false, and even distrust their own eyes when they see others being harmed.

When you worship power, compassion will look like a sin.

My favourite part of the sheep and goats passage is that even the sheep ask “When did we see you hungry, naked or in prison and take care of you?” So even the “righteous” aren’t doing the right thing to score points with the Lord. They simply do it because they want to care for their neighbour.

Trump is OK with people on his side to carry guns but not OK with Alex Pretti having a legal gun. How convenient to be hypocritical!

Beware of any Christian movement that demands the government be an instrument of God's wrath but never a source of God's charity, mercy, or compassion.

Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents.
