DRIV3R doesn't have vehicle AI in any of its missions. When you're chasing someone in a car the game plays back the same pre recorded movement. However, in the third mission, the devs recorded an alternate route if you block the path of Baccus' car before he tries to escape.

it's funny because you can posit both: - if they're not important, why have them in the game? and - if you're actually willing to have the game connect to an external server just to write their dialogue, are they really that unimportant?

I wonder if they just arbitrarily came up with a quota to fill like "there has to be 500 NPCs with dialogue!" and then didn't think to scrap that idea when they realised they didn't want to write all that

i take frenzy damage every time i see someone go "well i just use it for the boring stuff". what are you TALKING about? if it's boring or unimportant, why are you putting it in? NPC dialogue is fertile ground for worldbuilding, creating verisimilitude, conveying important information, and hijinks!!

lrt: npc dialogue is not only a "fun part" but there's something about it where it's one of the places you can see the idiosynchracies of the writer. toby fox, tim schafer etc, write NPC dialogue that you feel like only they could write
