To not make this as just being about men, racist misogyny is sort of fascinating in how it contradicts itself too: on one hand, white women see many WOC as sexy Jezebels stealing all the 'good white men', on the other WOC are also brutish manlike beasts who threaten white women by being uppity.

This is also why when people discuss the "masculinization of non-white men" I look at them askance because racialization and gender aren't that clear-cut. Sometimes racialized men (and women) are hulking brutes, sometimes they're feminized and unmanly, it's all quite contextual.

It's sort of funny/annoying to try to explain that in various Asian countries, yes standards around masculinity can be less rigid than in the west, because that sounds like I'm letting patriarchy in these countries off the hook.

Bluntly, the transfem main character in this story barely registers as trans at all, and very little about her transness actually impacts the story in any way. So if that was "unrelatable", then I think the issue is just that even mentioning transness is a problem.
