After a discussion with their attorney, I have confirmed that Juan, his 16-month-old sister, his mom, and his dad have been deported.

According to their attorney, ICE deported the family with only the money that they had in their commissary—a total of $190.

To unnecessarily deport a sick baby and his entire family is heinous. My staff and I are in contact with Juan’s family.

We are laser-focused on tracking them down, holding ICE accountable for this monstrous action, demanding specific details on their whereabouts and wellbeing, and ensuring their safety.

I have an update on Juan Nicolás, the 2-month-old baby detained at Dilley, and his mother.

Me and my team have been in contact with Juan’s family. Juan has bronchitis—according to his mom—and at some point in the last several hours he was unresponsive. Juan was still discharged from the hospital despite that around midnight today.

Juan’s mom went in front of an immigration judge this morning. She was told she will be deported, but was not told when or where. Both Juan and his mom are back at Dilley and their future remains uncertain.

We are all deeply concerned that Juan and his mom will be deported and that Juan’s health will continue to deteriorate. His life is in danger because of ICE’s monstrous cruelty. I will continue to provide updates and we will keep fighting to protect them.

The ICE raid at my house was targeted at a woman who ran her own business and paid taxes with a proper TIN for years. No one is safe.

An Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights spokesperson tells me they've gotten word of people recently being detained during immigration check-ins at the Broadview, IL ICE facility. They said ICIRR has also gotten word of people with asylum cases having check-ins moved up to this week.

So, this is happening: ICE in Lawrence, KS. As a father of two biracial kids, I have a giant pit in my stomach.

The 1996 immigration law that President Clinton signed (written by a Congress controlled by Republicans), plus 9/11 and creation of DHS, set the table for the enforcement only securitized approach to immigration we live with today. We need a change.

Europe is doing same thing as Trump in terms of third country agreements, just trying to make them seem rights abiding, which won’t exist in practice. This has been one of the most frustrating developments to track, including the sanctioning of lack of ties requirement by UNHCR.

I was in Minnesota last week. The Somali community is terrified. Their vibrant businesses are closed, people are afraid to go to work, legally admitted and thoroughly vetted refugees are being called in for reinterviews for no reason. This has nothing to do with immigration or welfare fraud.

This is a subtle point but I’ll try it out as a “yes, and”: What Minnesota (not just Minneapolis) showed us is even bigger than “love your neighbor,” because in Minnesota, “neighbor” is a more expansive category than proximity. It’s anyone who needs help.

It’s also not true. It’s apples to oranges. Both Obama and Clinton levels of deportations were fueled by rapid border removals. Trump, through brutality and defiance of the law, has managed to halt most border crossings. Deportations from the interior are at record levels. That can’t be done nicely.

Depressingly common anecdotes about medical care at Dilley and an example of why so many of us have fought against family detention since 2014.

Working on climate makes me think a lot about language that is accurate but also at the scale of the problem - this shows why “concentration camps” is the right term for the US, in exceptional prose.

“If you were swept off the streets in vans by secret police wearing masks; if your initiation into detention involved transit camps meant to hide your departure and effectively disappear you from legal help, temporarily or forever; +

“if you are held with others who are denied due process; and if you are detained with people who have predominantly been rounded up more on the basis of ethnicity, race, religion or political affiliation than for any criminal charge you have in common, you are in a concentration camp. +

“It is only a question of what stage concentration camp you are in, and whether you will be stuck there until the camp is allowed to transform into its next nightmare form.”
