I'm just over here toiling away on 17th and 18th-century legal history unmoored to any contemporary issue, and it took me two years before I even started putting pen to paper. Discovering a brand-new understanding of 600 years+ of legal history and having a written paper in weeks is... curious.

Also Miller’s intolerance is blind to the fact that his fellow travelers see him as Jewish and out if they had their way. He is delusional, hateful, ignorant, and self-sabotaging. Not commenting on your disagreement (and I love James). Just dismayed.

Yup it’s as if the Know Nothing campaign against Italian and Irish Catholics never happened and that they were not demeaned, excluded, and not white (as was true of my Jewish German and Polish grandparents and my extended family’s Italian and Irish Catholic grandparents).

I see a lot of people dunking on Miller, and rightly so. But the point of racism isn't the internal coherence, but the power structure: Getting to determine who is in and who is out. In other words, a small group of people get to decide -- not abstract rules.

The US is becoming like other, less prosperous countries, only at a dramatically bigger scale. People can’t just decouple from it, it’s far too big for that, but they will move away on the margins, and hedge their bets.

A new planning document shows that ICE is looking to establish a national call center in the Nashville area to support the 287(g) program through which hundreds of local law enforcement agencies are conducting immigration enforcement. But what it's describing is more than a typical call center. 🧵

Context: The number of 287(g) agreements between state/local agencies and ICE has skyrocketed from 135 to 1,135 during this administration. A 740% increase. We should expect continued growth, as DHS began to provide major financial incentives for participation last month. 2/10

Now ICE is seeking feedback from potential contractors on opening a national call center to support its law enforcement partners in the 287(g) program, fielding 6,000 to 7,000, calls a day. 3/10

The primary function of the call center, according to the Nov. 4 request, is to "receive electronic and telephonic inquiries from 287(g) partners in the field, analyze data, perform database cross-checks, and confirm enforcement actions in the field." Source: sam.gov 4/10

The key sub-functions section is where it gets interesting. It suggests that ICE is planning for its state and local 287(g) partners to play a larger role in targeting unaccompanied children, as well as "non-detained docket reduction." 5/10

The non-detained docket is essentially a list of people who are not held in ICE detention while they await the outcome of their immigration proceedings. It includes asylum seekers awaiting hearings, people with pending appeals, those in alternatives-to-detention programs, etc. 6/10

So ICE wants to use its partnerships with local law enforcement to go after more non-criminal immigrants. And children. This will in absolutely no way make our communities safer. 7/10
