I'm seeing people wonder why ICE is going after Charlotte. ICE has been at war with Charlotte's sheriff ever since he won in 2018. We'd covered this at Bolts back in the day; this quote is from that sheriff:

For those keeping track: Since Illinois police forces' "Unified Command" secured the area around the Broadview ICE facility (whose allegedly inhumane conditions are now the subject of an ongoing federal class action) in early October, about 100 people have been arrested while protesting there.

Charlotte is not even within the 100-mile “border zone” that CBP claims to have jurisdiction over.

Broadview's mayor keeps calling the protesters "out of towners." Every time we are there, we talk to people from the town on the front lines. (Also this is a tiny town y'all, it's reasonable for someone in like...Brookfield or Melrose Park to feel like this is their community as well!)

the cook county sheriff’s office confirms 21 anti-ice protesters were arrested this morning by local police outside the broadview ice detention center.

Members of what appears to be the Cook County Sheriff’s SWAT team are here now. The vibe is pretty chill. Maybe 150 protesters singing on a beautiful 60° fall day after our snow on Monday.

Capitol rioter/Proud Boy/all around weird guy Terry Newsome and some other known right-wing agitators have been spotted. This is another regular occurrence—as the crowd thins, they screw up the courage to enter.

As the protest organized by faith leaders concludes, officers with ILEAS have arrived. Some with pepper ball launchers. ILEAS is a statewide “mutual aid” police organization. Similar to NIPAS, which we’ve frequently seen here, but is limited to northern Illinois. About 1/4 of protesters remain.

Earlier, in the first round of arrests, we saw state troopers drag one woman down the street over 100 feet to their wagon.

revising my estimate of arrests so far outside the broadview detention center to closer to 15-20

another law enforcement agency i haven’t seen here before. the illinois law enforcement alarm system is a statewide “mutual aid” system for police to share resources (similar to nipas). these are likely police from other local departments. crowd is slowly dwindling. maybe half what it was.

vibes have chilled somewhat. lines of police facing protesters on both sides of the “free speech” zone. faith leaders still leading demonstrators in song as people dance and chant. “get up, get down. chicago is an immigrant town!”

the scene currently. i’d estimate the number of people arrested somewhere between 5-10 but it was honestly hard to tell amid the pandemonium. protesters are signing, “whose side are you on? whose side are you on?”

Riot cops have withdrawn for now, replaced by cops with less gear.

State troopers in riot gear join the mix of cops. They just arrested at least six more immediately after this scene.

Cook County deputies, Illinois State Police, and Broadview police just arrested at least 8 to 10 people, including several faith leaders. State police in riot gear now arriving.

ICYMI, @govpritzker.illinois.gov in October claimed state, county and local police at Broadview were working "to protect people’s ability to peacefully exercise their constitutional rights." In the month since those same police have arrested about 80 protestors at Broadview.

at one point, i watched a cook county sheriff’s officer (who appears to be in charge) point out a priest in the crowd. he and a couple officers then went into the crowd , dragged him into the street, and arrested him. situation is still tense as crowd jostles with police to get into the street.

faith leaders and demonstrators tried to take beach street, which has been shut down to car traffic for weeks. immediately, cook county sheriff’s police, state police, and broadview pd moved in to aggressively tackle clergy, drag protesters across the ground and arrest at least 3-4 people.

Faith leaders requested access to provide pastoral care to any captives inside the building, which has been denied.

Police seem worried about this gap. Setting up the flimsiest barricades they could find.

The crowd was spilling over into the street, forcing police to re-open the “free speech” zone on the other side of the street. Recently, police closed that area to all but credentialed press.

Here in Broadview, outside Chicago, a large group of faith leaders & protesters have gathered this morning outside of ICE’s detention center. This looks like one of the largest protests on Beach St. in weeks, where the city of Broadview is still enforcing a small “free speech” zone. It’s packed.

“cbp agents may have left our city, but our neighbors are not free,” another faith leader tells protesters outside the broadview ice detention center. “god demands freedom!” musicians then lead the crowd in song: “tear down the walls. tear down the walls at broadview.”

a faith leader speaking to the crowd points out that masked federal agents kidnapped people as they were mowing lawns, dropping their kids off at school, seeking medical care, and attending court. the crowd chants, “shame!”

faith leaders are starting today’s program outside the broadview ice detention center with song. the crowd sings, “a world without cages is at the tips of our fingers and the palms of our hands.”

hello from outside the ice detention center in broadview, illinois. there’s a decent crowd of protesters already here and more folks trickling in. leaders across faith traditions have organized this morning’s demonstration to demand ice to stop kidnapping community members.

As expected, the Justice Department tonight has appealed the order from U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Cummings that aims to release hundreds of detainees who were arrested by ICE. The feds are also seeking a stay.
