Ellis repeatedly accuses multiple CBP and ICE officials of lying (under oath) and says their "widespread misrepresentations call into question everything" they "say they are doing in their characterization of what is happening." She broadly discredits their testimony as objectively false.

The Trump administration argued the orders “subject the government to burdensome, costly and intrusive mandates -- including training, documentation and reporting requirements — and cripple the government’s renewed implementation of the nation's immigration laws after years of non-enforcement."

the cook county board of commissioners have approved a $10 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, which starts 12/1. it doesn't include new taxes/fees—but both the sheriff's and state's attorney's offices got sizable increases despite calls from advocates to freeze law enforcement spending:

for those not keeping track: masked feds, upset about being followed during kidnappings, reportedly swerved their car into martinez's, got out and said, "do something bitch," then unloaded five shots into her before driving off. feds then charged martinez w/ assault and offered $50k for more info.

New: the govt has moved to dismiss its assault case against Marimar Martinez and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, two people accused of "box[ing] in" a Border Patrol vehicle in Chicago on Oct. 4. One agent shot Martinez, with evidence presented to the court that he later bragged about in text messages.

3/ 👩‍⚖️ the broadview six were arraigned last week on federal conspiracy charges stemming from a september anti-deportation protest outside the ice jail. after the hearing, one defendant said, "these charges will not silence us from speaking out against this injustice." in this week's make it make sense, a weekly news roundup from the @chicagoreader.com: 1/ 🪖 border patrol chief greg bovino and his gang of masked brutes skipped town (for now)—but that doesn't mean federal agents are done disappearing chicagoans.

As budget talks stall out, I keep coming back to this one. From a budget perspective, CPD operations are almost entirely discretional. (Mind you, pensions and lawsuits are another matter.) It is an active choice to prioritize this spending above all other spending, year after year.

New: a 7th Circuit appellate panel has issued a stay on Dustrict Judge Sara Ellis' injunction order, which limits federal immigration agents' use of force in the North Illinois court district. The panel, consisting of two Trump appointees and a Reagan appointee, found the injunction "overbroad."

Good morning from Chicago's Dirksen Federal Courthouse. A status hearing was set this morning in the case of Juan Espinoza Martinez, whom the govt. accuses of placing a $10K murder hit on Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino. But apparently - and at the last minute - that hearing was cancelled.

This interview w/ Ring's pro-police surveillance CEO is deceptive in a number of ways. He seems to suggest police can *only* get footage if you agree to share it, but makes no mention of what happens if police present a warrant straight to Ring.

Bottom line: Ring wants to make money & police want surveillance. They will work together to sell cameras. Awareness of your space is nice, but no one has shown that that much surveillance actually makes towns safer. Gets some convictions? Maybe. Prevents crime and lower crime rates all around? No!

So many unnecessary arrests to “protect” a closed-off, dead-end street every Friday and Saturday—and now, after another week of horrible optics, they change the rules yet again.

four days after violently arresting 21 people for walking in the street, broadview “unified command” announces it’s expanding the “free speech” zone outside the ice jail to include part of beach street.

“Trevor said she’s just one of several openly LGBTQ+ public officials who has brought concerns about the name change process to the state’s attorney’s office this year. Trevor questioned whether the process is even necessary or has any public safety benefit, as prosecutors have argued.”

For those keeping track: Since Illinois police forces' "Unified Command" secured the area around the Broadview ICE facility (whose allegedly inhumane conditions are now the subject of an ongoing federal class action) in early October, about 100 people have been arrested while protesting there.
