#HorrorWritersChat Research! Research! Research! I wrote FOG OVER MONS, which is set during the Battle of Mons in France during WWI. My husband is a history buff. He helped me with the time period, military practices, uniforms, etc. I researched the battle as well as the Angels of Mons legend.

Q3: #HorrorWritersChat I write in the past and I always look up slang and the weather. I like grounding my fiction in a believable, verifiable reality. A short I’ve been polishing is about a weird meteor shower from ages ago. If it inspired me to write, I want you to be curious, too.

I have a collection of historical non-fiction, and wherever I can, I look up primary sources. That way you get authentic speech, behaviour, e.g. Henry Mayhew's interviews with Victorian costermongers, or Charles Booth's notebooks & poverty map. Proper research sets atmosphere. #HorrorWritersChat

Research, #HorrorWritersChat! Not just wikis of information on the time period but I'll try to find letters and personal accounts from that era, specifically from around where I want someone to be. It helps gauge speech patterns and language, which I feel helps a lot to ground the characters.

My novel "The Pure World Comes" is set in Victorian England. I spent five years researching the era through reading and documentaries and audio books just to bring that era to life. And I like to think I did a good job of it. #HorrorWritersChat

Research. For Survivor's Eye, I set it in 80s Southport as I grew up there in early 90s so had a general sense of it, but could tweak details. The upcoming Familiar Territory revolves around Pendle, so I went through a dozen books about the Pendle Witch trials just to hint at #HorrorWritersChat

If I’m going very far back I’ll read a book about a history of that period. Sometimes I’ll talk to my dad, an amateur historian. #HorrorWritersChat

So much research! I just finished reading Devil In the Shape of a Woman for a witch novel, and I'm also writing a novel set in Venice during the Renaissance, much of which takes place in a bookshop, so I took a course on early modern manuscripts! #horrorwriterschat

#HorrorWritersChat What a fitting question for 90% of my work! My academic background is historic theatre, late 1800s & extensive tour guide work. My favorite part of worldbuilding is the physicality of areas, walking streets my characters would walk & finding the 19th C. spaces that still exist.

I tend to read stories and novels set in that time period. I watch some TV and movies depicting the era. Then, I dive into research mode. This, though, can be dangerous. I do enough to make it look like I know what I’m talking about rather than so much that I never get to writing. #HorrorWritersChat

Obsessive deep dives down the internet tubes will do it usually. So much original source material is now available with a few choice key words...And I am especially grateful to my two local library systems for maintaining some amazing online archives... #horrorwriterschat

#HorrorWritersChat My siren short story, Drifting Waves is mostly told in flashback. However, the timeline it takes place isn’t THAT important to the story. If I did, I would try to make sure it fits the period it’s set in, and the timeline flows well.

I start with fiction & non- (diaries, newspapers, contemporary accounts) written *in* that period, then nonfiction written *after* that period *about* that period, to reflect the characters' native experience *and* our distance from it. Any excuse to read nonfiction, amirite? #HorrorWritersChat
