Ray. Mutherflippin. Bradbury. His small town simplicity and creative, exquisite use of quotidian language speaks to me deeply, and I think we could mesh his small town sensibilities with my gold rush hometown ones for a fascinating play on rural communities facing horrors among the rolling hills.

100% Poe. He was my main inspiration for starting to write horror. Before that, I was all-fantasy all the time, but Poe’s stories awoke my dark side. 😂 I also think our shared propensity for romantic longing would allow us to mesh well. #HorrorWritersChat

Hallo! It's been a minute since I've been able to dive into the #HorrorWritersChat, albeit a bit late... My name is Justine, I write weird shit, and... Q1: "Hodge" by Elinor Mordaunt (c.1921). Strange, sad, Frankenstein-esque tale of unearthing an early human from the tide pools. Poor Hodge.

Alice and Andy from Little White Flowers predate the first draft of that story by about two years. I used to have a core set of characters that I would just move from story to story. It took a while, but I finally found the story that worked for them! #HorrorWritersChat

Q2: #HorrorWritersChat This one is perfect! The Boddicker Letters originally started as another entry in my weird West universe of San Dios. Titus was a journalist in the west who met with The Badman and went dark. The story didn't quite click, so I rehomed him in Innsmouth and, well, much better.

Rose Marie, my quirky 🍕 delivery girl, was originally going to be a well-intentioned antagonist in a canceled YA horror novel. I brought her back as the co-protagonist (with Sonia) of my upcoming debut novel! I brought her back because I love her & she deserved to be a heroine #HorrorWritersChat Q2

Q2: #HorrorWritersChat Just recently to submit to an anthology call! I’ve had a story inspired by @shadowsatthedoor.bsky.social’s Troughton character sitting on my hard drive for a year or two that I wasn’t landing. The anthology inspired the tweaks I needed to consider to “resurrect” it.

I haven't done this as yet. But I do have 1/2 a story which has sat in my file for ages, Monk, based on Ghost Brigade's Clawmaster lyrics. I want to get back to it and finish it. Spookily it has vampiric overtones. This might be the push to return! #HorrorWritersChat

Talking about this the other day. I feel like all of my works of long fiction are essentially variations on the same theme. And there are characters who appear, perhaps "resurrected", with different names / faces. But uncanny similarities. Probably read too much Kafka as a kid. #HorrorWritersChat

This weird thing that I literally saw in a dream, and it haunts me, so it has appeared in several stories. It's a child-size and child-shaped creature that is covered head to toe in eyes. Its mouth is also an eye, and it splits when the creature smiles, dripping ichor. #horrorwriterschat

My stories are usually self-contained and can't be wiggled around much, #HorrorWritersChat. Other than snatching world-building bits from other things I don't know if I've done this.

I haven't really done this with plots but there are a ton of minor characters, references and locaitons that recur in various stories, published or unpublished. I just like the idea of all/most of my stories sharing the same world. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat Q2: I am doing this constantly. Elessa is an amalgam of a fanfic concept with a world/story ive been working and reworking since I was 11. Jamal/Csindra, Rook/Willow, Kiera, and a character who's gone through so many renditions Ill just call her Tasha are the most persistent.

#HorrorWritersChat Q2: Oh wow, I do that all the time. Anything that isn't available for the public to read could end up in the meat grinder or stitched into something more promising. I'm currently eyeing my first novel, an epistolary horror, for rebirth as a dark fantasy thriller.

#HorrorWritersChat Q2 I haven't yet, all my characters have been different in each story. I know a couple of people have said they're keen to see a prequel to my story The Hive, so I want to go back to those monsters one day.

#HorrorWritersChat Willow, the MC from my supernatural thriller Badlands began life as a side character in another project. She totally ruined that project because her character was so strong, so I resurrected her when I realised Badlands was her story.

#HorrorWritersChat I wrote a story based on Poe's BERENICE that was published. I've also resurrected my main characters from my TRAILER TRASH ZOMBIES short story to turn into a novel. With a title like that it's obvious it's a horror comedy. :)

My novella Scream Cheese is based on Tobias Falzone's title submitted to a 1994 Goosebumps contest. It didn't win. I asked his permission to use so it wouldn't go to waste. I also got permission from Lauren Fishman and Mike Sneed to wrote stories for their titles as well #horrorwriterschat

I have a monster that disguises itself as a beached jellyfish that did not work in the story I was writing. But I believe it deserves to rise again and it is coming in a flash fiction soon. #HorrorWtitersChat

#HorrorWritersChat Damien from one of my really old vampire stories became François in TFTNG. I resurrected him because I liked him. He was a character that worked better as a villain than a protagonist, so when I needed a villain, I made his worst qualities come to the forefront.

#HorrorWritersChat Q2: I had originally killed off Ohanzee's wife way back after she had their third child, but it wasn't working. For some reason, even a small tidbit like that caused huge changes for his character later on.
