When the supply of available homes goes down relative to demand, prices increase. This is one of the best established findings in housing policy, and policymakers who don't center this aren't going to fix the housing crisis.

Homeless people are not the only people who need housing. There are millions of people who would like to move out of their parents’ houses, ditch their roommates, or leave bad spouses but cannot because they cannot afford their own place thanks to the shortage of homes.

Even after the administration's illegal freeze on funds and massive program cuts via the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," there are still unspent pockets of federal money available to states.

One funny thing about this is the United States already has it: compared to any peer democracy, a massive proliferation of hyper-local governments including an absurd number of micro-municipalities in major metros, and a ludicrously large number of local elected offices. It mostly sucks.

Blue cities should tear up the roads in front of ICE facilities and then start decades of community engagement and input sessions to rebuild them. Let's harness our core competencies.

Many in California recognized that CEQA was a major impediment to needed housing production but it took years to build the political will to pass major CEQA reforms. Now, a new poll finds 74% support the CEQA reforms with just 14% saying it went too far.

At the same meeting the Las Cruces DA asked #nmleg to match the DA's salary to that of New Mexico judges Even if this happens, it wouldn't address recruitment problems. Rep. Reeb pointed out the Clovis DA has 3 prosecutors working remotely from other states because people don't want to move there

Barbara Lee speaks for me! For years, Oakland has been building lots of housing downtown and at BART stations, while still getting impacted by spillover demand from West Bay cities adding 10 jobs for every new home. SB79 will bring fairness and relief by having all cities do their part.

Unfortunately it’s the same dynamic in building codes. Blue states let building and fire officials kill single-stair reforms or load them down with impossible conditions, while red states push forward more cleanly. It’s unfortunate because blue states have way more demand for these buildings.

This particular flavor of housing discrimination is very common in the Northeast, especially the suburbs. I am glad to see it getting more attention.

When the LA city council opposed our first transit oriented upzoning bill on local control grounds in 2018, LA’s HUD Fair Market Rent was $1,663. They have opposed every subsequent bill with the same rationale: trust us, we will fix this ourselves. Now rent is $2,625. Enough is enough. Pass SB 79.

Here's the public comment I wrote opposing this anti-SB 79 resolution. Cowardice is the right word, especially after council opposed similar legislation almost a decade ago and then used that much-vaunted "local control" to turn the housing crisis up to 11. Kudos to the 5 progressives who voted no.
