The actual left of center affordability agenda would involve: antitrust in the ag industry, regulatory reform in housing, transportation and energy permitting, and straight up nationalizing healthcare. Not to Lib out too much, but these are all different frames and different markets are different!

Residential permits might also lead drivers to have even more entitlement over the curb than they have now. Instead of "I pay taxes so how dare you take my parking" it would be "I paid for a permit so how dare you take my parking." That could make it hard to install bike lanes or bus lanes.

The US housing shortage is acute & driven by policy. The prevailing explanations for why voters oppose new supply focus on two things: "Homevoters": Homeowners protecting property values. "NIMBYism": Neighbors fearing local nuisances (traffic, parking) in their "backyard."

What are the potential policy implications? First, design matters. If the YIMBY movement wants to build broad coalitions, it cannot ignore aesthetics. Policies that ensure better design or "fitting in" (like form-based codes) might reduce political friction.
