Similarly, the executive branch can't close a federal agency created by congressional statute, but too much reporting credulously states the closures as if they are sort of done deal. Elon Musk and DOGE are now publicly targeting Lutheran groups for cuts. Among those listed: Global Refuge (formerly LIRS), one of 6 faith-based groups that have long helped the govt resettle refugees. Not clear why Musk contends this funding, which is longstanding and well known, is "illegal."

Lutheran Social Services is one of the largest employers in South Dakota, operating senior living facilities across the state. Republicans are shutting it down Perhaps more concerning is Mike Flynn, known foreign asset, having access to this data?

One thing I will say gently is, I think "mutual aid" sounds academic or theoretical to a lot of people because the US education system does not meaningfully teach Black history. Formal mutual aid societies were an integral part of how freed/escaped enslaved people helped each other survive.
