From the @mayor.nyc.gov Reddit AMA, Leila Bozorg just became one of my favorite people in the mayoral admin. No "weighing community input" NIMBY-coded BS. Just, we all gotta let housing be built near us because we're living in a citywide crisis.

And that’s saying a lot, considering my place of employment. We need more housing to keep up with demand. The PRO Housing program is helping big cities and suburbs remove barriers to building more housing. This move is completely shortsighted.

We see similar dynamics in Ann Arbor, documented in the new Comprehensive Land Use Plan. Opponents still cite low population growth as a reason to ban housing. But we do need more housing. And even if it turned out we didn't need much, upzoning doesn't force the development of unneeded buildings.

If your ticked off about corporate homeownership, wait til I tell you about the impact of restrictive zoning and building codes on reducing housing supply and driving up costs in a manner than makes housing a lucrative investment.

A new condo building in Honolulu has 310 income-restricted homes. These don't merely benefit the residents in the new units; through vacancy chains, those residents free up their previous homes for other poor people to live in. This vacancy chain mechanism also works for the 202 market-rate homes.
