I live in a dense area of N. Portland, and my sense of community has literally never felt stronger, even though I and most of my neighborhood friends live in apartments. Upzoning means more neighbors, and more neighbors means richer communities. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!!

I lived in the fastest growing zip code in the U.S. for 6 years and guess what. It rocked. I saw a lot of cranes and cool buildings and so many new neighbors! Life rocked! This is my argument in favor of Inner Eastside For All.

It feels so damn good to be at Portland City Hall tonight for the Inner Eastside for All Resolution rally and Council hearing. The first @pnwelcome.bsky.social annual gathering that I attended was the 2022 event where we voted to pursue Inner Eastside for All as our next big housing campaign.

It’s been so great to see @councilormorillo.bsky.social take the lead on this!!! The faster we get the ball rolling on zoning the faster we get more homes in these high opportunity, transit-rich neighborhoods!

This proposal is the culmination of years of community work. @pnwelcome.bsky.social led a coalition of 20+ organizations housing advocates, environmental justice groups, climate activists, transportation reformers in the “Inner Eastside For All” campaign to push for this upzone.

Every home in the inner Eastside is another opportunity for a family member to age in place near loved ones, for someone to live somewhere where they can use transit and avoid owning a car, for queer folks to thrive, for parents to be able to raise a trans kid in a blue state. Every home matters.

Every home we build in the central core of Portland is another chance for a current or future Oregonian to become/stay our neighbor. It’s an affirmation we want to be a sanctuary for people fleeing fascism in other corners of the country, it’s also a vote in support of Portland’s economic recovery.

Wednesday is a very big day for an effort that’s been underway for over a decade to change Portland’s zoning laws to build a more inclusive, affordable, sustainable, vibrant, and livable city. Come to our rally at city hall on five pm, and read this lovely thread someone at PNW put together:

Local housing policy is a really great way to advance equity, transportation, and climate issues all at the same time. This Inner Eastside project is a preview of Portland's better future.

On April 15, Portland City Council will consider a resolution focused on keeping the Inner Eastside Area Planning project moving forward. This is the resolution passed out of committee on March 12th (unanimously!) with huge support from our membership and coalition in the form of written testimony.
