What we saw in Vienna is a city where housing is treated as a human right rather than a means to make profit. In Tuesday’s Homelessness and Housing Committee, @councilordunphy.bsky.social, @councilorgreen.bsky.social, and I shared some of our takeaways from the trip.

Last Friday I enjoyed a beautiful September day out in Argay Terrace! We started with a visit at Happy Go Lucky, a local childcare provider based in the Nick Fish building.

Yesterday, Council voted 12-0 to unanimously approve the lease for a new district office in East Portland that Councilor Dunphy and I worked hard to secure. That’s something we should celebrate!

not a lot that cities can do in this moment to spur improved transit, since it's a quagmire of regional and state funding. but the one big thing municipalities can do is make more spaces for buses to move reliably and quickly through town, kudos to @counciloravalos.bsky.social for leading on this

We know that transit is a lot safer than driving no matter how you slice it, and cities built to encourage transit trips see far less people dying on their streets. Making transit faster and more reliable has to be a part of the work to get Portland to zero traffic deaths.

At a time when our community is under attack from the highest levels of power, it was powerful to gather and celebrate our Latinidad at El Grito. El Grito, held on the night of September 15, marks Mexico’s fight for freedom from Spanish rule. It’s a tradition about independence and liberty.

We knew that the Vienna trip would come with costs, but ultimately this is an investment in building quality housing with affordability for all.

There’s an ongoing debate about how much vetting of policies and agenda items should happen in committee vs. whole council.

I am not going to back down because the East Portlanders I represent are counting on me and other Oregon officials to protect our communities. When Trump sent federal agents to our city in 2020, he and his administration ultimately left as the losers. We’re not going to let him win this time either.

Some people have suggested we owe the public a running commentary of every text or chat between councilors. That’s not how open government works. What we owe is that decisions and deliberations concerning city business are made in public— not that every private message is broadcast in real time.
